After reading this book, I am in fact a dogtologist. In fact, I think there are many more people who practice dogtology and don't even realize it. As a group, we are the people who cover our social media pages with pictures of our dogs sleeping and posting one nap time picture just isn't enough -- we post multiples of the same picture. We want the world to know that our dogs aren't just pets, they are our everything. The book Dogtology introduces a greater understanding behind those furry garbage pit snuggle bugs and the people who worship them.

I really enjoyed this humorous look into dog worship. As a dog owner, I am familiar with almost all of the rituals in the religion of dog ownership.

I rarely give anything less than 5 stars on books like this. Who doesn't love animals, especially dogs? I have always had dogs and still do, or they have me, either way. So I almost always connect in some way with the books. Dogtology by Jeff Lazarus is the unusual exception for me.

While there are certainly the periodic cute moment or observation, as well as some basic insight, this failed to either be a truly inspirational book about dogs or, other common route, a particularly fun and cozy look at dogs. This is part of a marketing ploy to make money and it reads like it. The attempts at insight are largely already common knowledge, which in and of itself is not a big deal, but the way those things were expressed were forced and hardly compelling.

This book had the opposite effect on me than just about every other similar book, namely, it irritated me. I wanted to correct some hyperbolic comments, smooth out the rough attempts at humor (or whatever it was supposed to be), and put an end to the annoying voice in which it was written.

No doubt there are plenty of people who will buy and find enjoyment in anything dog related, Lazarus is counting on that to market his other products, so there will be plenty who will at least claim to like this book. Like Barnum said, oh, never mind, let him bilk the willing.

I cannot in good conscience recommend this book. The only reason it isn't a one star is the obvious reason the book will have some degree of success, it is at least peripherally about dogs. If that is sufficient for you, then by all means shell out the bucks and look for other branded merchandise to blow your money on.
