I found this book very difficult to read. It dealt with so many issues stemming from an abusive loveless childhood. When the three sisters return home to make peace with their comatose mother they are all dealing with very dysfunctional lives. Infidelity, spousal abuse, alcoholism, and weight issues follow them back to Minnesota. When they gather together they discover that they all have their dark place to overcome. They need to deal with the past and try to move forward – can they forgive their father for his abuse and their mother for her neglect? Can they forgive each other? They blame each other for desertion and lack of solidarity, never realising that they had each suffered their own private traumas. Will a therapist help them confront the past?

The story actually flowed rather well in spite of the difficult topics and the emotions. The characters were well developed and you were able to connect and feel for them. This book would connect with readers who enjoy a thought provoking read or someone who likes to read fiction based upon societies ills. I was not expecting that much angst when I picked up this book, reader be warned. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.

I must say . . . I found the title to be a perfect fit for its story.

Well, I won't attempt to give a full detail of what the story is about. Others have already shined a bit of light to those written pages. Just know, this author has done a remarkable job in presenting its characters, scenes, and drawing its readers into their lives as the story unfolds. Truly, there was nothing boring about its tale . . . it kept a reader’s interest. And yes, there were some heart-felt and emotional moments, behind those pages.

Although it’s a fictionalized story, the words presented and read felt oh so real. Families can be torn apart through the hurt experienced. Amazingly though, there’s always an incident to pull them together for the healing process. And this story was no exception.

I've had the pleasure of reading some of this author’s other works of art. And this book is simply another masterpiece to her storytelling abilities. Truly, there is nothing like facing ones demon head on! And there are families who can actually benefit from its reading. I know a few and I’m sure you may as well. Terri Ann Leidich, kudos to you!

Family Inheritance by Terri Ann Leidich is a heartbreaking story of three sisters struggling through their adult life as a result of the childhood abuse they suffered. Their Mother is dying, they all return home and are reunited. With the help of each other they decide they deserve so much better and set about to make changes in their lives. This is an emotional book which I had to stop several times to wipe the tears before I could read more. I enjoyed reading this and found it to be a real page-turner, I look forward to more by this author.

My favorite quote from the book is...
Maybe her childhood and her past were like any other family inheritance. It all depended on what she did with it.

I received a free copy of this book from Net Gallery in exchange for my honest review rather it be good or bad. Thank you.

A special thank you to BQB Publishing and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

FAMILY INHERITANCE, by Terri Ann Leidich is a riveting novel, of a family’s hopes and dreams and the tragedies and secrets which haunt them, as they journey to forgiveness and acceptance.

Three sisters are reunited at their dying mother’s bedside, Anna Teresa Miller –in the old farmhouse in northern Minnesota. Anna is dying and she does not care, as how could death be worse than her life? As the novel opens Anna relives her life and where it all went wrong at age sixteen, pregnant and forced to marry Walter, a reluctant groom, at best. Anna’s life had no room for dreams or play. She hears a voice; she cannot die in peace until she comes to terms with her daughters.

Each of her daughters all imagined a better life. However, each have lived through an abusive and loveless childhood with their demons, secrets, and bad memories, driving their currently dysfunctional life with poor choices.

Helene, always the strong one, leaves behind a shell of a marriage in Atlanta and her false country club lifestyle not at all what it seems. In Northern Minnesota, in her cracker box house government subsidized neighborhood, Alice has finally fled an abusive husband, Jake, and is afraid her failing courage will put her children in danger. In Dallas, Suzanne can no longer deny how an alcohol addiction may destroy everything she's worked for--an addiction that barely masks the terrible wounds from her father.

Family Inheritance is an emotional and heartbreaking novel, one of flawed and troubled characters, with highly charged social issues of abuse, alcoholism, rape, and infidelity. As the sisters are forced to come together in their time of need, and face their past and feelings, their buried hurts surface in order to move with on with acceptance, courage, and forgiveness.

A beautifully written and inspiring family drama--one of overcoming life’s messiness, and not allowing it to have the control and power to define your future. Looking forward to reading more by Terri Ann Leidich!
