James Lovelock (No not that one, another one) is (was?) a journalist living in Manchester, and managed at times to combine his hobby of caving with his writing. Of course he was the go-to person whenever there was a caving story which normally meant a rescue. THis book is better than just some quick copy though, it's his thoughts and investigations inot the few (surprisingly few) deaths that did occur in the British caving scene between the 30s and when it was published in 63. A couple of these were world-wide news stories, especially the tragedy of Neil Moss, a oft mentioned tale even in today's caving world. It is fascinating reading about it first hand from someone who helped with the rescue effort.

It's also amazing to hear how tough cavers were back then, bypassing obstacles with gear we couldn't even carry - although it does help when you can organise a team of 20 to assist. There are a couple of chapters where more serious incidents were averted solely down to the individual's fortitude and prior preparation. And some wry comments on those who venture underground ill prepared.

The final section details a trip into the Berger, at the time the deepest cave in the world and the first to pass -1000m in depth. Even today such a trip is a major undertaking, and attempting it on even the 'new' electron ladders must have been punishing beyond belief. But to one of the few who've ever ventured that deep is something worthy of any effort.

Overall a fascinating book, with some illustrating highlights into life and society of the 50s and 60s, how technology really has moved on a pace, and what challenges caving possess at any time. But the rewards are great, and suitably prepared people, as part of a club, should experience little real hazard.
