I really enjoyed the parts of this book where the writer reflects on her life, her journey into aging, and shares her Jungian analysis of the many dreams she has in this process. I felt that was the part of the book that matched the description and led to my picking the book out. There were some places where the book digressed, most notably when she had a chapter where she was doing some in-depth analysis of poetry that she was drawn to. There was nothing inherently wrong with that part, but it felt like a real break away from the rest of the book and I ultimately started to skim that chapter. There were some similar but shorter passages talking about art or other writing that felt a little off topic, aside from being an interest of the authors. Overall, I liked the book and I think it would appeal to anyone looking for a memoir that addresses late life growth and identity finding.… (mehr)

California Dreaming is a collection of light observation style poems ranging from Matisse paintings and forign countries, to the pandemic. Most of these felt very outward focused and, although pretty, did not sit with me very long to taste the dark vibrancy that I usually seek in poetry. The poems that MacKenzie turned inward were by far better in my opinion. True shadows of reality could be chewed on and demanded more of a pause, a savoring of thought, as opposed to the light hearted sections that I could not help but turn quickly to the next. Somewhat like a bag of chips, none stood out. I'd recommend this for a backporch reading. Have some iced tea and enjoy this slice of life selection.… (mehr)

Une approche qui oriente alors sa vie de 72 ans, vers l'épanouissement personnel et mental, la délivrant peu à peu de ses démons intérieurs.

Lizez-le ! Un superbe récit qui agit comme un baume sur les maux du corps et de l'esprit ! Lily Iona MacKenzie m'a captivé, tant dans sa quête du Grall de ne plus craindre le vieillissement et d'agir au quotidien, choisir sa nourriture, se poser les bonnes questions.
Une approche optimiste et chaleureuse qui interroge intensément notre rapport face à notre veilliesse et notre mort, et qui implique la redécouverte de notre moi profond et de "notre royaume intérieur", comme elle le cite si bien !
