Daphne de Marneffe, PhD, is a psychologist and the author of The Rough Patch: Marriage and the Art of Living Together, In her clinical practice, she offers psychotherapy to couples and individuals. She teaches, and lectures widely oh marriage, couple therapy, adult development, and parenthood. An engaging mix of theory and personal experience. The author explores big issues throughout, such as the prevailing ideal that women not let themselves be sidetracked by motherhood, and young women's "have-it-all" assumption that they will be able to take time out of careers for motherhood but still advance and earn just as much as their male counterparts.

Thankfully, that wasn't the case here. The Rough Patch actually felt like it got stronger as it went along. The author took care to bring in many case studies of couples she's worked with, and these were interesting and relevant. Her analysis also felt on-point: she seems wise to me, something I don't always feel after finishing a book on topics like this. The blurb on the front says "Anyone in any relationship at any stage of life could stand to learn from the wisdom in these pages", and I'd more or less agree.
That said, human relationships are vastly complicated entities. The problems they have are rarely simple, and the solutions rarely are either. This book doesn't promise easy solutions, but does provide pointers on what to do as a starting point. I think that's about as much as we can ask.
Recommended particularly for those who feel they're in a basically good marriage but still want to throttle each other now and then.… (mehr)
