Jewelry designer Graceann Palmer has two days to hire a fiancé to bring home for the holidays; to bring a stop to her mother's matchmaking. Jake Falco, also known as The Falcon, helped Graceann once before, so she takes a chance and asks him for his help once more.
Jake Falco is a man full of mysteries and is back in his old hometown on a mission. When Graceann asks him to be his pretend fiancé over the holidays, he sees it as a chance to get something he's always wanted; getting to know Graceann.
As they pretend to be a couple in love, it starts to feel like the real thing, until Jake's secrets are revealed. Graceann and her family are left feeling betrayed by Jake's revelation, but can Graceann see past it?
My thoughts
This is another book that I saw on NetGalley and thought it would be great to read in the weeks leading up to Christmas. This is a short story and it only took me a few days to read it.
The concept of this story is great. Graceann's mother is always trying to set her up and marry her off. She means well, but the men she thinks are good for her, are far from Graceann's ideals. Graceann wants to show her family, especially her mother, that she's happy with her life as it is, without a man in it. So she hires Jake to be her pretend fiancé so she can show her mother that she's capable of choosing men for herself.
Graceann should really have just told her family the truth, but of course that wouldn't have made much of a story. She's adamant that she doesn't need a man to be happy, but she's soon changing her mind when she finds herself having feelings for Jake. She certainly didn't expect to start falling for him when she made the deal with him, and fully expected that she'd be able to walk away from him after the holidays. Of course, over the holidays, sparks flew between the pair and they suddenly felt like they weren't pretending anymore.
I loved Jake's character. He clearly has his own issues and these are revealed as he starts to open up to Grace. He hides his insecurities with cockiness and bravado, but this really made him a loveable and funny character. He made me chuckle on more than one occasion, and for me, he made this book really special.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and it was a fantastic light-hearted read full of Christmas cheer; everything you need in a Christmas book. It's funny, romantic, and definitely recommended to anyone looking for a cheerful Christmas story.
