I like the large print and oversized photographs in the book, but I wish the book's size was a just a little smaller. It makes it difficult for students who would like to read the story independently to cart the book around. That said, It is a great story of endurance, hope, and leadership. The book gives a chronological account of the journey Shackleton and his men took as they traveled on the Endurance, the ice floe, and on the lifeboats. The other book about Shackleton's journey by Armstrong gives a more detailed account of the trip and has quoted text from the crew members. I wish she had made this story for younger students a little more descriptive. It is very matter of fact and tells the story well, but I wanted the language to be more descriptive. Some of the harrowing details of the journey such as the description of the leopard seal attack were left out of this version. . Although I liked the illustrations, I prefer the actual photographs from the expedition.
I think it would be a good book for upper elementary students to read independently

Surviving the cold is a feat within itself, but maintaining that feat for over a year is unbelievable. A picture book that can describe a scenario while keeping upbeat is extremely hard yet Armstrong succeeds. A boat stuck in pack ice is terrifying, but add to it a travel across uncharted land with animals who were capable of destroying the crew. Their story of survival would make any boy scout proud.

This book tells of the same feat as 'Shipwreck at the Bottom...' does, but with fewer words, less details, but with beautiful acrylic illustrations. The copy that I had was huge, and it made the story much more engaging than the other book. This one would be better for younger students, perhaps for a read a loud.
