Über den Autor

McDermott emphasizes Springfield and Sangamon County in Illinois, where Abraham Lincoln developed his law practice, handling more than 5,200 cases in a career that spanned nearly twenty-five years. Culturally diverse, with elements of both urban and rural America before the Civil War, these locales mehr anzeigen provide an ideal landscape for investigating the ways in which juries served as the most visible connector between law and society. Stacy Pratt Mcdermott is the assistant director and associate editor of the Papers of Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois, and the coeditor of The Papers of Abraham Lincoln: Legal Documents and Cases and The Law Practice of Abraham Lincoln. weniger anzeigen

Fascinating woman, fascinating details. I appreciate the author's obviously extensive research and use of primary sources rather than just others' biographies. I also liked her objectiveness; Mary is neither demonized as a crazy spendthrift as many suggest, nor is she painted as simply the sweet loving wife of Abraham Lincoln. She is depicted as her own complex person.

Warning: This isn't a quick read although it's relatively short. The writing is densely detailed. Also, this belongs to a historical series which apparently required tiny print with tight spacing., and I would have preferred larger font/spacing.

Main Complaint: There are no pictures! I would have loved photos of Mary Todd's family (and houses) which are discussed, the house she and Lincoln built and enlarged, their family, etc. etc.

This is a wonderfully written and very well researched telling of Mary Todd Lincoln's story. We always hear about Abraham Lincoln and, usually, of Mary in correlation to him. But it was nice to know about her childhood, young adulthood, and of her as wife and mother. This telling also dispels and explains some of the negative stories that are told about Mary. I enjoyed it very much and highly recommend it!
