What would we do without crashed UFOs and friendly alien mentors? The big, bad aliens would get us for sure. Cuddy Perkins is a likable young man from rural Tennessee whose low IQ makes him the butt of local bullies. The autodoc of an alien spacecraft changes all that. At its best, The Simpleton is a readable mashup of Flowers for Algernon and The Last Starfighter, but as several reviewers have noted, it suffers from clichés that are hard to take.

5th in series. The U.S. Navy is fighting a losing war against an alliance of aliens. The combined alien force has better weapons and more ships. Captain Gavin Quintos sees the need to change tactics but his commanding officers ignore him. Quinton deserts, taking most of his loyal crew and stealing the newly captured starship with unknown capabilities. He turns pirate and is hunted by the Navy and the aliens. Now he is building a force to turn the tide of war while learning what his new command is capable of.… (mehr)

McGinnis, Mark Wayne. Galaxy Man. Avenstar, 2017.
Mark Wayne McGinnis is a prolific writer of military science fiction, but Galaxy Man is an interstellar hardboiled crime thriller. Protagonist John Gallic is a former policeman whose family was murdered by a villain known as the hammer-and-nails killer. He has moved to a frontier planet where he is a privatized marshal. As a marshal, he mainly works as a repo man, retrieving spaceships whose owners have not made the payments. But when the hammer-and-nails killer, or perhaps a copycat, takes up his gruesome business again, Gallic is on the case. The most interesting science fiction aspect of the story is the testy relationship Gallic has with his spaceship’s artificial intelligence. Gallic refuses to name the AI and says that Ais are just tools and that his, in the snarkiest sense, is more of a “tool” than most of them. 3.5 stars.… (mehr)

Star Watch by Mark Wayne McGinnis is an interesting audible book that was labelled book #1. As I started listening to it, I felt it was was a book 2 or 3 in a series and not the first book. I read some of the reviews and found that the author has another series and used these characters in it and wrote that series first.
I enjoyed the unorthodox space opera feel, it was nice have a freer feel to the system. I did find the characters a little flat but they have intriguing potential! I enjoyed the unique alien life and interactions, the plot, the potential of Boomer.
The narration was adequate with keeping voices straight and emotions appropriate for the scene.
