Composing music is a difficult task when you have been told that it is hard to do. The
purpose of this project was not only to institute a young composers’ competition into an
elementary school, but to make writing music fun and accessible for all the students at
Grande Reserve Elementary School. Using engaging lessons and online composition
software, students were able to watch their creations grow and change right before their eyes.
They could manipulate melodies and edit rhythms in order to craft their own perfect opus.
In order to subjectively judge the competition, entries were distributed to 27 judges
ranging in age, teaching experience, and music base knowledge. The judges used a twelve
point rubric based on the research of Dr. Maud Hickey from Northwestern University, and
determined a first, second, and third place winner. These students then performed their own
