MINE by Amanda McKinney
The Anti-Hero #1

Fast-paced, action-packed, sizzling story that I could not put down ~ Not sure how I will wait for book two!

What I liked:
* Astor Stone: billionaire, owner of Astor Ston Inc, lethal, lethal, responsible, protective, controlling, alpha to the nth degree, brilliant, silver fox, grieving, instant attraction to Sabine
* Sabine Hart: brilliant, math major, financial analyst, knows many people but has few if any friends, is ready for a “change”, strong, resilient, outspoken, drawn to Astor
* The dynamics and dialogue between Astor and Sabine
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing
* That I was drawn into the story, felt a part of it, and cared about the characters
* The twists, turns, hints, and surprises – some creepy dark things happened
* The supporting characters that I would like to know more about – Cillian and Leon come to mind
* The complexity of the characters and getting to know what made them tick
* That I can see why Astor and Sabine were drawn together and clicked
* Knowing that there is a second book to look forward to
* All of it except…

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how evil some people can be
* Having to wait for the next book

Did I enjoy this story? Yes
Would I read more in this series/by this author? Definitely

A Marriage of Lies by Amanda McKinney

Wow…Just ~ W OW ~ This is a twisty twisted tale with so many secrets and so much intrigue that I will need some time to process it, I think! Good job Ms McKinney!

What I liked:
* That it made me think and care
* I was absorbed by the characters and story as it unfolded
* The plot, pacing, setting, and writing were excellent
* The characters were not easy to like but I did feel I understood them
* The characters I felt most in tune with were Rowan’s dog Benjy, her aunt Jennifer with Alzheimer’s disease, and perhaps Chris & Emma
* That Kellan never gave up on Rowan
* The twists and turns and red herrings
* How it all concluded without any loose ends still needing to be tied together
* Thinking about all of that was covered - lies, secrets, infidelity, attempted suicide, murder, twisted love, unhealthy protectiveness, mental illnesses, criminal behavior and more
* That it made me think about love and loyalty and what people are willing to do in the name of love

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing that abuse and abandonment of children happens all to often and the child fostering and care systems are often insufficient and even abusive
* The pain more than one suffered at various times in the story

Did I like this story? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Definitely

I recently finished 'Buried Deception' by Amanda McKinney and immediately made sure I had all of the alerts set that would let me know when another book by her would be available for ARC. She proved with that book that she was going to be a favorite author of mine and this next book certainly didn't disappoint. And if I thought the first one got nitty and gritty, then this one went full-on gruesome. In the absolutely best kind of way. I also loved that Mia and Easton made appearances.

Beckett and Jo were at the center of this book and I was loving the chemistry between the two of them. Beck has had a crush on Jo for a while, so naturally, when she becomes the target of a serial killer, he is right there to help protect her. Swoon! In checking out what other people think of this book, I noticed that some feel the romance is rushed between Beck and Jo. But, personally, I'm assuming since he's been crushing on her for a while, they at least have known each other for a while even if they haven't interacted much. Plus, their friends are together. So, I really didn't feel that things were too rushed and reading about their romance was a great addition to the suspense happening. I love them as much as I love Mia and Easton and that's saying something!

A lot of red herrings pop up in this one to lead you astray. And I'm not ashamed to admit that I absolutely fell for them and I'm willing to bet many other readers will as well because Amanda McKinney is a master at the craft of red herrings! Maybe if (when) I go back and read it a second time I will pick up on different things and realize I could have figured out the guilty party sooner. But those red herrings are so good and so well done. I strongly recommend this book and I recommend that you read 'Buried Deception' as well! I'll just be sitting here waiting for the next one to come out.

Buried Deception was incredible in so many ways, starting with its characters. The way that Mia described not only her own trauma but trauma in general, was so beautiful and raw. Amanda McKinney writes with so much truth woven into her characters and story that it would be difficult not to get sucked in. Add in the mystery and the genuine intrigue of the story and you had me completely lost in the pages.
Easton was so reserved with others, I expected him to have a long and difficult road when it came to trusting Mia. But there seemed to be something about her that pulled him in and took all his defenses out. And I love when the tough guy gets deep! Especially when it's someone he's attracted to. Mia certainly smashed through all Easton's walls. He was also a natural hero. But one who didn't realize how much of a hero he was. There were some jaded feelings from his own past. But he was also naturally protective over those he felt responsible for. And Mia was most one of those people quickly. More than that, he had a firm belief in right and wrong. And no one was going to sway him. So his job as CEO of a tactical tracking company made sense. As did his past as a marine.
The fact that Mia took her own trauma and situation and turned them into a way to help others was admirable. But it was also relatable. Because so many people take what they've been through and turn it into a career of helping others. Making sure they don't go through the same types of situations. Or helping them recover once they have. It made Mia an admirable character and a very memorable one too. Because when you read a lot of novels, it can be hard to remember all the characters you've read about. But Mia is going to be one I always remember. Because she is fierce, professional, and tough. But also allowed herself to be vulnerable and open with someone else. And I think that's pretty impressive. It was also clear she was a very talented psychologist and natural profiler.
The mystery and setting of the novel were creepy as hell. A stalker in the woods is a terrifying premise, to begin with. But add in that it's happening in the foggy and naturally eerie setting of the swamplands in East Texas? Yeah, that made for a pretty terrifying mystery. But in the best way possible, because I'm a sucker for a mystery that gives me chills, and this one provided that in spades. Every moment had me getting into it deeper and deeper. You know an author has a true gift when the real world around you fades away and you find yourself completely immersed in the world they have presented to you. That's what happened with this book and it made for an even better experience. I was lost within these pages and did not want to be found.
Easton and Mia have both had traumas in their lives and while they did their best not to be affected by the case while investigating, that's easier said than done. Especially for Mia who was feeling her past blend into the situation in front of her in the present. It was understandable why Easton was concerned about things in that case. But Mia was also an extremely capable and strong character. So when the two of them teamed up, I knew there was going to be some intense sparks flying. And I was so happy to be right. Their interactions were bursting at the seams with tension. It was clear pretty much from the moment they teamed up to work on the case, that things between them were going to go way beyond professional.
This novel checked all of my boxes and then some when it comes to finding a good book. It had a beautiful romance intertwined with an intriguing and terrifying mystery. But it also had so much depth and emotion on every page. The mystery kept me riveted to the pages for the entire length of the novel and the ending was satisfying. This is listed as book one and I cannot wait for there to be more books in this series. Because I absolutely will be reading all of them. And while this is the first book by Amanda McKinney I have ever read, it most certainly is not going to be the last. She has found another fan in me and is absolutely being added to my favorite author list.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The Keeper’s Closet by Amanda McKinney
Narrative of a Mad Woman #4

Another dark, chilling, psychological thrill-ride that explores a rather warped interconnected collection of people and their interactions with one another.

What I liked:
* The setting, pace, character development, nonlinear timeline, twists and turns, and conclusion
* The way the character interactions and dynamics were presented
* That more than one character was multi-faceted and not just good or evil
* That I was immersed in the story and wanted to know what would happen next…and how it would all play out
* Having an unsettled feeling at the end of the story and wondering if the story was REALLY finished or if there might be one more chapter waiting to be written

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Some of the thoughts I had while reading and wondering what it would require to be as self-centered and hedonistic as some of the characters were

When Beckett Stolle of LINX finds Aria, a young autistic girl near the body of a woman who was killed by the Pollack Butcher, he puts her in the care of psychiatrist Jo Bellerose to try and unlock her memories of what happened to the murdered woman. Using art therapy, Aria begins to paint elaborate patterns in red just like the Butcher uses when killing women. While Jo doesn't believe that Aria is involved, she does believe that there is a connection. As Jo and Beckett investigate, secrets come to light that might keep them from finding the murderer and might also keep them apart.

Trail of Deception starts out with a very good premise using the idea of art as a background for this serial killer story. However, the story soon goes off the rails with underdeveloped characters and a weak suspense plot. Also, the dialogue and the relationships between characters do not feel realistic. Issues of drug abuse, autism, and PTSD are given a very superficial treatment, making the story even less believable. Overall, this book is very disappointing, particularly because the first book in the series, Buried Deception, is so good.½

When Niki Avery is attacked by two men in the woods as she is heading home from a yoga retreat, she thinks she might not survive, but killing one of the men and being chased by the other leads her to the Steele Security compound. Gage Steele takes charge of her as more information comes to light, including the fact that the man Niki killed was later decapitated. Niki remains at the compound while she and Gage dance around their attraction for one another, but evil may be closer than they think.

Cabin 1 had great potential to be an outstanding romantic suspense novel with an exciting opening that takes the reader right into the action and builds on the anticipation with each page. Unfortunately, the story begins to fall apart when too many characters and plot elements are introduced in such a short novel, rushing everything to a cliffhanger ending that leads into the next book in the series. Everything gets shortchanged, including the series long mystery about the death of the Steele brothers' father and the romance between Gage and Niki. Overall, Cabin 1 could have been wonderful if there were just more pages used to develop the story.

Seven years after finding his father's body with a bullet between the eyes, Dean Walker is presented with a similar murder. This time the victim is Clint Novak, whose wife Heidi is shot at just moments after Dean delivers the news of her husband's death. As the weather deteriorates, Dean is tasked with finding a murderer among the Novak family and staff, all the while, trying to ignore his growing attraction to Heidi.

The Storm is a very average romantic suspense that relies not only on coincidence but also evidence that doesn't appear until right at the very end of the story, making it impossible for the reader to figure out the guilty party. Another problem with the story is the lack of character development, no doubt due to the short length of the novel, which also results in instalove between the protagonists. Overall, The Storm is a disappointment from an author whose work I have previously enjoyed.½

Told in alternate view points, this the story of Betty Lou Abbot, or Betts, and how she came to be a widow in a big house in the town of Whispering Pines. Betts met Jack at a medical conference in New York, they married quickly and returned to his hometown of Whispering Pines. Within a year, Jack is dead and the entire estate is left to Betts. Now, she is engaged to Ian and operating an illegal therapy clinic in her basement. But things are not what they seem at the Gadleigh estate - not with Betts, not with her clients and definitely not with Detective Stahl, who doesn’t trust Betts a bit.

Twisty and fast paced, this is an easy, quick read. But, because it was a novella, I felt the end was rushed and rather jumbled. McKinney definitely kept me on my toes though!½

Trail of Deception by Amanda McKinney
On the Edge #2

Dark, deadly and difficult to contemplate tale of a serial killer who has no remorse and is a heinous person I wished to be caught…as soon as possible.

What I liked:
* Jo: psychiatrist, partner in Dragonfly Clinic, complex, intelligent, caring, scattered, interested in patterns, has secrets, attracted to Beckett, wealthy, complicated childhood
* Beckett: ex-military, tracker, has studied criminal behavior, enjoys patterns and uses this information to in his job, ‘sees’ Jo and is drawn to her, partner in LYNX tracking & training business
* The way the relationship grows between Jo and Beckett and how it moves forward by the end
* Getting to see how Mia and Easton from book one are doing
* The look into the serial killer’s thinking
* The procedural aspects used, and clues found that gradually built up to reveal who the serial killer was
* The insight Jo and her mother gained about themselves and their relationship
* Wondering who will have their story told next as I eagerly await book three in the series.
* The plot, pacing, setting, character development, and writing

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about how twisted some people are and what makes them the way they are.

* Considering what made the characters the way they were

The Black Cat Stalker has been causing panic in the Louisiana swamp town of Skull Hollow. When a young girl, Courtney, goes missing, rescue specialist, Easton Crew and his LINX group are called in to help find the girl. Hypnotherapy specialist, profiler, and psychologist, Dr. Mia Frost is called in to help create a profile of The Black Cat Stalker. Once Courtney is found, Mia offers her services to help Courtney describe her rapist and deal with the trauma, but the more Mia learns, the more she sees similarities between Courtney's case and incidents in her own past. Little does Mia know but she has a stalker of her own.

Buried Deception is an excellent romantic suspense/mystery. The descriptions of the settings and characters creates an atmosphere that draws the reader in and doesn't let go until the very end of the book. The author uses the common elements of romantic suspense masterfully to create feelings of uncertainty and anticipation. Even though the romance doesn't inhabit as much of the story as the mystery, it's still very evident in the plot. Unfortunately the conclusion of the story and some of the character motivations don't reach the same level as the rest of the story. Overall, however, Buried Deception is a very effective romance with enough suspense and tension to make it difficult to put down and is well worth the read.½

The Raven’s Wife by Amanda McKinney
Narrative of a Mad Woman
Mad Women Series Book 2

Dark, gritty, intriguing story with twists and turns aplenty – a great GOTCHA moment and much to ponder after reading this, the second book, in a thought-provoking series.

What I liked:
* That the drew me in, made me feel, and care what happened
* Julia’s strength and will to survive the abuse her husband dished out
* That I did not know exactly what happened even though I did read the last few pages of the book to see what would happen…something I often do
* That what I thought was going on wasn’t always right – loved the surprises
* Thinking about genetics, nature, and nurture in how people turn out as they do and just how this might apply to more than one character in the book
* That this story will stay with me for a while
* Thinking about families and friends and how they can be wonderful or not so wonderful and being glad mine ARE wonderful
* Thinking about good versus evil and then about the shades of gray somewhere in between
* All of it really except…

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Thinking about domestic abuse and how prevalent it is in the world

“Why am I a therapist?”

“Because I’m broken.”

I have read a couple of Amanda McKinney’s books, but never reviewed them. This is the best I have read…so far.

Mia is a psychologist, who owns and runs The Dragonfly Clinic, specializing in Ptsd and criminal profiling.

Chief is the founder of the LYNX Group, a combat tracking facility and search and rescue team. He has been called out by Skull Country Sheriff McNamara to help find Courtney Hayes, who is lost in the swamp. Could the Black Cat Stalker have upped his game. Instead of raping and walking away, he now rapes and kills.

I laughed at the way Chief’s operatives scare trespassers off his land.

I did have issues with some of her characterizations of people in the beginning of the book. It doesn’t fit with anything I’ve seen on true crime and rescue shows on TV. BUT, it is fiction and artistic license does apply. Maybe there is a reason. I vacillated between a three and four rating, but because I could not put it down until I found out the ending, it earned that extra star.

Once the mystery got going, I was so into it, I could hardly stop to, well, you know. I love looking into the human psyche and reading about damaged characters dealing with extreme trauma, and villaway.

Amanda dealt with delicate topics, like brutal trauma, PTSD, rape, grief, loss, and so much more.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Buried Deception by Amanda McKinney.

I loved this book filled with psychological suspense and a bit of action. I loved that I could not figure out who the killer was until the very end. Mia and Easton were fantastic characters. I am hoping that there will be many more books featuring these characters. I received a copy of this book from the publisher for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

Buried Deception by Amanda McKinney
On The Edge #1

Excellent introduction to a new series by an author that has never let me down. Two tortured souls with difficult pasts shadowing their lives find a safe haven in one another after ups and downs that cement their connection and their love for one another.

What I liked:
* Mia: psychologist, works with three women who are also friends, suffered trauma in her teens, has anxiety attacks and PTSD, works with patients to alleviate similar symptoms to her own, uses birds as therapy animals, has chemistry with Easton
* Easton: ex-Marine, skilled tracker, owner of business with government affiliations, trains professionals in tracking and other skills, has a great team to work with, was smitten with Mia from first sight and has immediate chemistry with her
* Goldie: Parakeet, lives with Mia and other parakeets, vocalizes words , had me on YouTube listening to parakeets talk
* The plot, location in Texas, character development, supporting characters, and writing that drew me in
* Easton’s team: Dane, Beck, and Alex are intriguing and men that I would love to know more about
* Mia’s colleagues: Jo, Stella, and Luna are true friends and coworkers that are people I hope to hear more about as the series progresses
* The way the backstories of Mia and Easton finally came to light and how those backstories had an impact on their lives
* The thread dealing with the serial rapist-murderer and the way the criminal was eventually exposed
* That I was made to feel a part of the story and became fully invested in it
* Knowing that there will be another book to look forward to.

What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing that there are evil people in the world as bad as and even worse than the one in this book.

Every book I read by this author is a keeper! Once I began this story…I could not put it down…even when electricity was cut and I was under the mosquito net in the dark…I read on using my phone instead of my computer…LOVED this book!

What I liked:
* Samantha “Sam” Greene: Kidnapped in Mexico, American school teacher, divorced, single, beautiful, to be sold by human traffickers, resilient, strong, wise, caring, perfect for Roman
* Roman Thieves: Irish, orphaned early in life, immigrated to US, ex-military, works for Astor Stone, Inc, mercenary, strong, lethal, revenge oriented, undercover work for decades, perfect for Sam
* The first person telling of the story that switched between the two main characters
* That I who reads the end of books first did not see some of the twists, turns, and surprises in this book
* The dark gritty real feel of the story
* Knowing that this was fiction and yet also being aware that some of what transpired in this book is all too real and happens more often than we may realize
* Feeling I knew the characters and that I was with them on their journey…the good, the bad, and the ugly
* The growth and change in the characters and the positive impact they had on one another
* The slow reveal of who took Sam, why she was taken, and what the purpose was
* Finding out Roman’s backstory and learning with him some secrets that his mother had kept
* Learning a bit about survival, fishing, and a few other things
* Seeing a few of the men that work with Roman
* Thinking about how much undercover cops must go through to do their jobs…not fun…but it was interesting to think about…and wondering where lines are drawn when undercover
* The feel-good positive ending to the story

What I didn’t like:
* Exactly what I was meant not to like
* thinking about and knowing that too many humans are kidnapped and sold every day.
* Having to wait for the next book in the series

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series/by this author? Definitely!

I received an e-copy of this story for my honest review.
This book was a good read, and informative for some people. It shows some of the problems that different kinds of mental, and emotional, abuse can cause for a person. It shows how a hurtful past can mess with a person’s mind. It shows how there is a lot of work needed to get through, and overcome, that past. And, how strong someone has to be, mentally and emotionally, to make their life become better.

The blurb of this book and the reviews drew me in. I love a book that has suspense with a protective hero. There were parts of this story that were beautifully written. In fact, I was impressed with how the author crafted her sentences and portrayed certain scenes. However, the actual storyline fell short for me. It had great potential but everything happened so fast and certain parts of the story didn't resonate and seemed out of place.

My, Oh My!
What a story!
Astounding, Spectacular, Brilliant, and Breathtaking!
Now to try to find the words to tell you more…

What I liked:
* All of it really, but here goes…
* The writing – exquisitely plotted and beautifully written
* Dark in so many ways and yet with a glimmer of light here and there
* The love the sisters had for one another
* Learning the backstory of Collette, Jade, and their family a piece at a time
* Viscerally feeling what drove the sisters
* The focus the women had
* Being able to admire Collette and Jade while also trying to put myself in their shoes
* Collette: intelligent, computer hacker extraordinaire, strategist, savvy, flawed, loving, wealthy, businesswoman, capable, cunning, imperfect – capable of much more than she realizes
* Jade: strong, resilient, supportive, dedicated, free spirit, lethal, martial arts trainer, strong, talkative, protective, close to Collette, intriguing, opposite and yet similar to her sister Collette – eager to see what she will end up doing in the next book
* James: ex-cop, military veteran, DEA agent, alpha, commanding, lethal, intelligent, team oriented, intuitive, “sees” Collette as she really is and admire/cares for her, communicative, intriguing, really liked him.
* Blaze: assistant to James…would like to see him again in the future
* The way the dark gritty aspects of the story were handled
* That I could easily visualize the scenes in the story
* That I was fully engaged and invested in the outcome of the story
* Again, all of it really except…

What I didn’t like:
* Exactly who and what I was meant not to like
* Knowing that in real life there are people who experience horrible events like those mentioned in this book – I wish they didn’t

Holy Cow!! Think of Colette as Jennifer Garner in the movie Peppermint. If she is hunting you down, you better say your prayers.

While, Colette may be tough, even strong women need love and protection too. James is the man for the job. I like that James never gave up on Colette, no matter how much she tried to push him away. He was able to break down her walls and get her to let him in.

The ending with Colette being so vulnerable and James there to pick up the pieces is very fitting to this book. I can't wait to see the continuation with Jade in the next one.

Redemption Road by Amanda McKinney
A Small Town Mystery Romance

Captivating, compelling, complicated ~ this story had me invested from beginning to end. Words on the page evoked thoughts, feelings and memories while creating vivid images that will stay with me for a long while. This author creates multi-layered, intricately crafted, complex stories with memorable characters that I feel I know in real time.

What I liked:
* Rory: a woman who seeks control of her life as she spins into what feels like a void of nothingness, an artist who learned at her mother’s knee, compassionate, obsessed, complicated, and intriguing. I really liked and rooted for her to come into her own. The story is hers and I came to know her well.
* Christian: tormented, talented, torn and yet deeper than he knows. Abandoned early in life and then again…he has suppressed feelings and has become a hermit. An artist, creator, caretaker and more compassionate than most. He intrigued me.
* The growing relationship between Rory & Christian was well-paced and perfect.
* Cricket: great canine friend and anchor for Rory
* Fatima, Earl & Jay: loved getting to know them.
* The way the story drew me in and kept me invested
* The way the serial killer was exposed and dealt with
* Getting to know the back stories of Rory and Christians – and how knowing those back stories fleshed out the characters and made this book so much “more”.
* The surprises, twists and turns
* Watching Rory and Christian come into their own and how the two balanced and enhanced one another
* Seeing the “true love” of more than one couple in the story
* The way grief was presented and the impact it had on Rory
* The way guilt preyed and festered and prevented moving on
* The way the title of the book suits this story.

What I didn’t like
* Thinking about the sadistic serial killer and what he was capable of
* Knowing that there are others out there in the world who are experiencing the same things that characters in this book went through and that they may not be fortunate enough to find a positive way to come through safely.

Did I enjoy this book? Yes
