Sarah McNamer

This is a wonderfully done edition of one of the major devotional texts of the Later Middle Ages, the "Meditations on the Life of Christ." Sarah McNamer seeks, through this edition and its accompanying introductory material, to make the argument that this text was originally written in Italian by a Poor Clare nun and later reworked into the more widespread, Latin form by a Franciscan friar. Both the introductory essay and the translation themselves are models of clarity and accessibility, and I could easily see this as an edition that undergraduates could get to grips with (not always possible with medieval mystical texts). As I'm not a scholar of Italian, I can't make any judgement as to the efficacy or accuracy of the translation itself. I would have liked to see more thorough footnoting of the scriptural/textual references.… (mehr)
