- Galina Nikolayevna von Meck was the third child of Anna Davydova, a niece of Peter Illyich Tschaikovsky, and her husband Nikolay von Meck, son of the famous patron of the arts Nadezhda von Meck. On a visit to England in 1912, she met her first husband, William Noel Burrowes Perrott, with whom she had a daughter; the marriage was dissolved in 1925. Galina was arrested for trying to assist a prisoner over the Russian frontier, and spent several years in Moscow's notorious Lubyanka prison and in exile in Siberia. There she married for a second time to a fellow prisoner, Dmitry Orlovsky. She was released in 1935 and made her way to England. She wrote an autobiography, As I Remember Them (1973), focused on her early family life. She also translated much of the correspondence between Tschaikovsky and her grandmother into English.
