A useful little book, in that it makes a very serious attempt to clear up an area that has a decided amount of fog: just what was the order of battle of the Soviet Navy during World War II? Anyone who has ever read contemporary editions of Jane's Fighting Ships knows that information about the Soviet Navy is either scarce, wrong, or deliberately fudged. I'm sure that this book, published in 1972, could be amended and updated, but all the same, it's quite useful.

This is the earlier form of a book that Meister would rewrite by 1977. This set of handbooks has many gaps but the best that could be researched at the time. It deals with surface ships, some very odd to western eyes. There was at least another volume dealing with Submarines, but I didn't find them. The later book would be a better buy. Still one gets some deck plans and line drawings as well, as the best photographs available sat that time.

To some degree I wonder if this book might also demonstrate the extent that NATO was demonstrating its penetration of the 1970 Soviet navy security measures.
At any rate the book is a treasure trove of information about the desperation of the Soviets in the face of the German attack.… (mehr)
