It was great. Really helped contextualize some of the thoughts I had going into the book. Tony offers an alternative way of approaching the "enlightened" state eastern religions encourage you to reach. It's there for those who want it, the hard part is

The author shares 125 stories or parables from a variety of traditions, both ancient and modern. Story is really a single lesson of life that teaches inescapable truths about ourselves and our world.

It took me an awfully long time to read this because of distractions, so over the past few days I've gone back and read it from the beginning. And I find myself thinking "But I already thought this to be true, what you're saying isn't some great revelation."
But now that I think of it, the reason I thought it to be true was this book. It was only a year since I last attempted to read it, but it had such an impact that I've integrated it into my thinking and completely forgotten the source.

Praying with Body and Soul involves the whole person: our senses, our bodies at rest or in motion, our imaginations, as well as our minds and emotions. By paying prayerful attention to the body people will not only recognize the ways in which they already pray, but will learn how to deepen their relationship with God. Each chapter includes questions for reflection, and practical exercises, such as drawing, walking meditation, fasting, making music, dancing, and praying in sickness and disability. This guide to prayer can be used by individuals, prayer partners, and small groups.

Egy anekdota szerint Anthony de Mello jezsuita atya, ahogy illik, halála után Szent Péternél jelentkezett a mennyország kapujánál. Az apostol azonban kételkedve csóválta a fejét, nem volt benne biztos, hogy beengedheti-e a szimpatikus, de nem éppen hagyományosan gondolkodó embert. > QUI PEUT VOLER LA LUNE ! — Le maître de zen Ryokan menait une existence très simple dans une petite hutte, au pied de la montagne. Un nuit, alors que le maître était absent, un voleur pénétra dans la hutte, pour découvrir qu’il n’y avait là rien à voler.
Ryokan rentra et surprit le voleur : « Vous vous êtes donné beaucoup de mal pour venir me visiter, dit-il : vous ne devez pas partir d’ici les mains vides. Je vous en prie, prenez mes vêtements et mes couvertures en cadeau. »
Complètement déconcerté, le voleur prit les vêtements et s’en alla furtivement. Ryokan s’assit tout nu et regarda la lune.
« Pauvre diable, pensa-t-il en lui-même, je souhaiterais bien pouvoir lui donner le magnifique clair de lune. »

Imagine you met a sage well-versed in all the religious traditions (Taoism, Christian, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc.), knowledgeable of modern psychology and some philosophy, and gave 1 minute nuggets of wisdom. Well, that's this book. Much of the sayings are perplexing, some frustrating. But I found it delightful. Plenty to ponder and discuss. I plan to check out some of his other books.

Here were some of my favorites:
"Wisdom tends to grow in proportion to one's awareness of one's ignorance." -- "When you come to see you are not as wise today as you thought you were yesterday, you are wiser today."

"The divine is only found in the ordinary." -- "Holiness is a mysterious thing: The greater it is, the less it is noticed."

"What action shall I perform to attain God?"
"If you wish to attain God, there are two things you must know. The first is that all efforts to attain him are of no avail."
"And the second?"
"You must act as if you did not know the first."

"Are there ways for gauging one's spiritual strength?"
"Many."
"Give us one."
"Find out how often you become disturbed in the course of a single day."

..."Why is it that the West has material progress and the East has spirituality?"
"Because"... "when provisions for this world were being handed out..., the West had the first choice."
