I heard about this one over at 100 Scope Notes' Geisel Award predictions. The whole book is very supportive of beginning readers, from the introduction through the concluding note ("Great job! You are a reading star!").

For a book about a child recklessly cloning a bunch of farm animals into crazy hybrids, this book is very lighthearted and fun. Probably good for storytime, though some parents may complain it has a less than reverent attitude towards nature and science.

Designed, I think, to get kids to use iMovie.

I think it will be a fun read for those who love new gadgets than me. My favorite part was the ending.

Funny take off on the well-loved Goodnight Moon book. Perfect gift for those who are surrounded by electronic gadgets.

Is Otto a robot or an alien? Or both? Was this explained in an earlier Otto book?

I understand the pedagogy behind the controlled vocabulary, but I still don't enjoy reading such constrained texts, especially when the words are repeated so much.

I was a little disappointed in this book. I did think it would be more about feelings and how to identify them. It wasn't, it was super short. I thought this was going to be a good book to introduce feelings to my kid, but I was a little let down.

Great series for the beginningest readers -- kinda like dick and jane, if they starred a really adorable robot and his cast of appealing friends.

I'm a fan of Milgrim, and this is a super cute addition to his body of works. Explores feelings/ metaphors/ turns of phrase, with adorable illustrations.

Otto is sad but his hopes are raised whenever he sees a friend come by with a treat ... except it turns out that every time it's not a treat for him. Will Otto's bad day ever turn around?

This was a super fun book for the youngest of listeners as a read aloud or for beginner readers working on sounding out words on their own. Each page has a short declarative sentence that follows a pattern, such as "See Otto feel sad," and others also have a dialogue bubble that also follows a pattern, such as "I LOVE pie!" The repetition will appeal to kids listening to the story read aloud and will ease the reading process for beginning readers, as will the occasional rhyming words.

Personally, I loved that the book tackles emotional intelligence, even if it's only two basic emotions (sadness and gladness). And never fear, all's well that ends well in this story about friendship and kind gestures.

The illustrations are crisp and sharp with thick black outlines for characters set against a white backdrop. There are no extraneous details to distract, while the emotions and movements are clearly depicted.

Only the little boy in this story knows how to get Buddy to do what he should–with hugs and cuddles and lots of love! Beginning Reader, Level 1.

Young school age children and their parents will love this book about the perils (and victories) of getting ready for school. There are tons of visual gags that everyone will see and laugh at. Definitely a keeper.

Primary. This book is about a robot who builds something to helps a little mouse who wants to fly. The words and sentences in this book are very basic and it uses a lot of rhythm, so it would be good for beginning readers.
