Not sure if this book is about anything or why it got published. It wasn’t funny, it wasn’t interesting, it didn’t go anywhere, it just was, which is I ok for some people.

Often we read a book summary and decide to read it. Such was the case with this story which failed to hold my interest on many planes. The central character is dull beyond measure while the narrative lacks substance. Rather than belabor the obvious, I decided against reading more. End of story.

A sometimes-engrossing series of horrifically banal slices into the lives of several depressed women, this book at first feels almost like a white trash If On A Winter's Night A Traveler, but the only thing connecting one story to another is each protagonist's unwillingness to speak their true feelings to anyone around them. This is no surprise, since each is surrounded by a pantheon of stiffly patriarchal normies.

I believe that this book is realistic, and that makes me sad.

This book has been more than adequately reviewed so I won’t repeat all of the excellent summaries.

Mary Miller has a great eye for detail and she is a great observer of behavior. On almost every page there are scenes which resonate.

I “reopened” my Kindle at a random spot to test my hypothesis. At the 38% mark I found this:

“Elise and I went to the bathroom. There was a line bunched up in the small space, and I kept having to move because I was blocking the hand dryer. A mother had her little girl in the handicapped stall, coaching her in a high voice, “Now wipe, now pull up your panties, now your pants, are they zipped? They’re not zipped. No, you can do it yourself – you’re a big girl now.” Somehow it felt like was all for our benefit.”

Miller sees things that we all see, but some of us don’t pay attention. Mary Miller pays attention. This is excellent work.
