The blurb of this book doesn't do a great job of expressing how deep it goes emotionally. While crime and mystery elements are present, they are largely a vehicle for character work--and I mean this in the best of ways. The book is really about the main character struggling to overcome her trust issues, and the fact that a major source of those trust issues is the fact that she's a jewel thief and her husband is an FBI agent is largely incidental. It's also about how the work in a relationship doesn't end with marriage: it takes the question of how people communicate with each other and understand their relationships with one another seriously, and allows the main character to be really, really messy. I wouldn't describe it as a fun read so much as an honest one.
Its biggest flaw is that it feels a little unprepared to answer some of the questions it poses--I feel like the author could have spent another chapter or two resolving the central conflict, and it would have been a lot more satisfying. Still a very unique book.… (mehr)
