- Dr. David Murray is Professor of Old Testament and Practical Theology at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary, and Pastor of the Free Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. He was ordained to the ministry in 1995 and pastored two churches in Scotland for 12 years. He is the author of Christians Get Depressed Too, How Sermons Work, and Jesus on Every Page, and regularly speaks at conferences in North America and beyond. David and his wife Shona have five children and they love camping, fishing, boating, and skiing in the Lake Michigan area.

9/10 (excellent): This brief book is ideal for Christians who want a better understanding of the roles of the spiritual, the physical and the psychological in depression and anxiety. In six short chapters (only 100 small pages in total), Murray guides readers away from extremes, and to a balanced, biblical position that helps sufferers and carers understand depression, its causes, and what can be done to help. I've bought multiple copies, as I know it will be useful to give to many others.
9/10 (excellent): A very helpful book that deals with the frequent need to slow down in order (perhaps) to achieve more, or certainly to live a more sustainable pace. It will be helpful for any Christian men, and particularly those in ministry, who feel there aren’t enough hours in the day. The book is aimed at men — there’s a significant emphasis on the work place, and most of the illustrations are on traditionally masculine themes. A companion volume is aimed more at women.
So when I read non-fiction books I generally place them into some sort if category in my head based on usefulness. The categories generally go something like this: not useful/learned nothing; not useful or remotely interesting; interesting but not practical; useful, but wouldn‰ÃƒÂ›Ã‚ªt read again; useful, but would read again; useful and will keep on hand to refer back to. This definitely falls into the last category. This book is perhaps the most useful book I have read for the woman who is dealing or has dealt with burnout or depression.
The author is a medical doctor and has knowledge in counseling, yet this is one of the most practical, easy to read books on this topic. Her knowledge is evident. She discusses burnout, depression, health, medications and spirituality. She talks about how everything is interconnected and one area of life can impact another. The author addresses a topic that is often taboo in Christian circles in a gracious and knowledgeable way.
While the author writes from the experience of being married with children, I think that the tools and truths given in this book are useful for any age. I could have used this book as a single college student.

A very practical book for middle aged pastors and Christian men. We don’t have to live on the fringes of burn out. The grace paced life is doable, but we need these reminders. I highly recommend this book to my pastor friends.
