- Regine Normann was born at Vesterålen in northern Norway. After the death of her father in 1871, she was raised by relatives in Trondenes. She married a teacher who was brutal towards her, and endured his violence for a decade before she left him and escaped to Oslo in 1894. She established herself in Oslo as a teacher and in 1908 remarried to the writer Tryggve Andersen, though this marriage ended in divorce. She made her literary debut with Krabvaag: Sketches from a Little Fishing Village, in 1905. She is best known today for two collections of northern Norwegian folk tales published in 1925 and 1926, which were reissued under the title Ringelihorn. In addition to stories, she also wrote novels, which often dealt with the theme of oppressive marriage.
