Vanya Oakes

This is a children's book aimed at mid to late elementary ages. It was written in the 40's so it is rather out of date. It was neat to read though. I found that it had a very political slant to it. It takes place after the Japanese are beaten but before the communists take over and is made up of 8 different stories about different children. There is plenty of politically incorrect subject matter to go around! First, the stories are only about boys. Second, any time they refer to the Japanese they call them "Black Dwarves". Interesting. I will keep this book for my daughter to read later, but if you can find it in the library you should check it out before deciding to buy.… (mehr)
