Anita Bloom Ornoff

Author joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in early 1943 but became deathly ill with an infection which Army doctors could not cure. Neither the Army Camp she was assigned to (at Nacogdoches Texas) nor the civilian hospital she was ultimately brought to could handle her unusual infection, and their inept and seemingly indiffferent treatment of her (a compilation of scorn for WAACs and antisemitism) worsened her condition. She was finally brought to an Army Hospital near death, and they operated on her spinal cord, which had become infected. She was eventually discharged and sent to a VA Hospital. She spent years fighting to walk again and fighting for veterans benefits.… (mehr)
