Interesting and informative but I do wish her writing had more structure and was less verbose.
the book would really benefit from at least one sketch map for each village section.

A selection of interesting stories about events and structures in Argyll. Better structured than 'Lost Argyll' probably because she sticks to smaller areas and stays more focussed on the topic at hand. As in Hirta, tetanus in infants appears to have been a major problem in the crofting and slate mining communities .
and I finally know what all those war graves are doing in Campbeltown cemetery.
Fascinating and easy read but may assume too much background knowledge for those not familiar with the area and Scottish history.… (mehr)

A fascinating book spoiled by some dreadful proof reading and convoluted sentences.
While I learned a lot about Argyll, ms Pallister's use of language is at times almost impenetrable with it being difficult to identify the subject of the sentence, she also has a tendency to digress from her subject. There are a large number of typos and other simple errors. The worst example of this is where, in one paragraph, two men setting out on a journey become two women by the end.
She assumes a considerable background knowledge of Argyll and Scottish history .
The book would have been improved by a stronger structure within chapters, with perhaps subsections and headings and the inclusion of more and more accurate maps.
However for all its faults an interesting read and a useful resource.
