This is a meticulous review of the archaeological stages of the Tower of London over its 1000 year history, including the somewhat disastrous “restorations” of the 19th century. The author’s insights are to some extent incorporated in the guide to the Tower of London he co-authored, but this is a more comprehensive and intriguing examination.
