I don't know why this fell a little flat for me, but it did. I wish there had been more information on the girls, or on Udora's previous marriages, but there was precious little backstory. And I found Meggy, the maid, rather annoying.

Janina Scott is a patient coordinator in a hospital. Although her job deals a lot with patient advocacy, helping patients with paperwork and things of that nature, her training is in nursing. It’s as a nurse that she notices an unusual increase in certain symptoms that she believes could reach epidemic proportions if the cause is not discovered. Her initial inquiries fall on deaf ears, however, until David comes back.

Three years ago, Janina was very serious about Dr. David Madison. But then he suddenly left her to marry another woman, one who was terminally ill and very rich. Now that his wife is dead and he’s gotten his affairs in order, he’s back in town to try to salvage his relationship with Janina. She’s wary, but his contrition causes him to offer his help finding the cause of the mysterious illness. Janina has to take whatever help she can get.

As the two investigate the fruit fly pesticide that is being sprayed nightly over the California town, and the laboratory which produces it, they face set-backs and threats from the lab security, local police, local government, and even from the hospital and Janina’s boss. How far does the cover-up go, and what exactly are they hiding? And will Janina and David be able to expose them without ruining their own lives, and before someone is killed?
