Paradise of dissent : South Australia 1829-1857 von Douglas Pike
Interesting and comprehensive look at the kind of people that settled SA, what they were hoping to achieve, and how they... failed? He points out that the 1850s were a watershed moment, where SA lost a lot of skilled labour and perhaps culture and enterprise to the eastern states. There's also a lot of discussion of the various religious denominations. That makes sense given the idea of a religiously tolerant utopia drove a lot of people to come to SA - but it's hard to get through for someone like me.… (mehr)
