- ALEXANDRA POPOFF is a former Moscow journalist and Alfred Friendly Press Partners fellow. She is an expert on Russian cultural history and the author of several literary biographies, including the award-winning VASILY GROSSMAN (2019) and SOPHIA TOLSTOY (2010). Her book THE WIVES became a Wall Street Journal best non-fiction title for 2012. Popoff has written for The Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, National Post, The Globe and Mail, Literary Hub, Tablet Magazine, and other media outlets. She lives in Canada.

Vasily Grossman and the Soviet Century von Alexandra Popoff
This literary biography gives wonderful insight into the mind of a brilliant, humane author and into his life as a writer and a Jew in the Soviet eras of Stalin and Kruschev.
Si la obra maestra de Vasili Grossman, Vida y destino, se hubiera publicado en vida del autor, lo hubiera hecho a la vez que Doctor Zhivago de Pasternak y antes de Archipiélago Gulag de Solzhenitsyn, pero Vida y destino fue secuestrada por el KGB. Vasili Grossman (1905-1964) se formó como ingeniero, pero abandonó su trabajo en los años treinta para dedicarse en exclusiva a la escritura. This is an important book for anyone who appreciates Tolstoy's works. Without Sophia, we might not have had War and Peace or Anna Karenina. However, Tolstoy's genius cost his wife dearly, both in her reputation and her own personal interests. She's became one of the most maligned figures in literary history. This book makes no secret of telling Tolstoy's story from Sophia's point of view.
