I have read reviews calling this the next Harry Potter. While this was a good story, I wouldn't go that far. While the Harry Potter books had an appeal to both adults and children, The Betrayals of Grim's Peak seems to be written more for a younger audience. It doesn't seem to have the sophistication necessary for an older audience.

I did love the world created in the book. The undersea world was very detailed. I thought it was smart of the author to show how the space under the ocean was manipulated to contain air pockets for the people to live in, rather than have the people evolved to breath under water. The domestication of certain underwater species was also interesting.

Even though there was an element of magic here, it did not dominate the story. I was happy that the characters did not rely on magic to solve their problems, but had to use their brains.

Overall, this was a fun story, with a really unique setting. I would recommend this for middle school readers.… (mehr)
