Martin Rhodes, ex-detective, ex-convict, arrives in Bridgeton hoping for a new start. But where to begin. At what he knows best, solving crimes for payment.
Meanwhile a killer is leaving bodies on trains and will not stop until his message is received. That investigation is being lead by FBI agent Jo Pullinger.
These two cases run through the book. An enjoyable read and of the two main characters I liked Rhodes the best and hope to read more about him.

Hyder Ali is a temp reporter at the Daily Times newspaper. He lives with his mother and brother, Akbar. He consistently suffers from inferiority complex in comparison to his brother, who is a doctor.

Hyder's university professor Eric Freeland is found dead by hanging and is declared as a suicide. Detective Nolan (an alcoholic) has lost his wife in a car crash. Amanda - an accountant at the prestigious TriGate Management Group, is dead due to a malfunctioning break.

Hyder and Freeland's daughter get together to dig up the Professor's death as they are sure he is not the suicidal type. Though they are initially not able to convince Nolan (the investigator in this case), he realizes this while following the trail of the prescribed half-empty anti-depressant bottle, found in Freeland's room after his death. With the mentioned address misleading, the suicide note not convincingly emotional, and identifying the signature as forged, Nolan joins the duo in the search of the killer.

In the mean time, Hyder receives a courier with a few pages from the diary of his dead mentor (sent by him before his murder), giving him a few bread crumbs that are supposed to help him. Breaking their heads together, they decipher the clues little by little.

Now, Hyder, having been chucked out of job, Jessica - being followed by a man in a suit, along with Tom Nolan are on the hunt for the murderer.

This was a very good, well-written, fast-paced thriller. There was too much of Islamic content, that, for a moment I felt irritated. But then, I realized, that having read book like "Da Vinci Code", such thoughts should only make me a biased reader. Though the cause of the murders is finally revealed, i did find a lot of loose ends, for one, how exactly the prof was killed is not revealed, and a link between the antagonist and Hyder's employer is revealed, but could have been more convincing.

This is a fast and steady paced mystery about Detective Karl Whaler methodical search to find out who killed Mark Mansfled and why. As the bodies keep piling up, Detective Whaler begins to put the pieces together. He knows the how and he suspects there is a stronger relationship between the killer and victims. The subplot set in Vietnam provides some answers, but throws the pacing off a little bit.

Genius teens, a genius adult residing in a mental institution, single parent cop with a partner, and several bad people all come together when revisiting a cold case. The characters stay true to form and each has a role to play. There are a few loose ends with some of the subplots, but overall it was enjoyable.
