Fazlur Rahman (1919-88) was the Harold H. Swift Distinguished Service Professor of Islamic Thought at the University of Chicago. He was the author of ten books, including Islam and Modernity and Islam, also published by the University of Chicago Press.

The only chapter that I read closely for the class I took recently on the Qur'an was chapter two on "Man as Individual," but based primarily on that chapter, this was possibly my favorite of the many books assigned for the class. Rahman's style---the way he mixes scholarship, cultural influences, and spirituality---really spoke to me. I got so much from just this one chapter. I anticipate reading more from this book now that the class is over.
An interesting and firmly internal account of the challenges the islamic tradition faces today. By internal I mean that the author does not espouse secularization: his interests lie in the possibilities of religious reform within Islam. It's great that books like this are available in English and I recommend this one to anyone who wants to understand more about islamic thinking and the values of islamic society.
