Sanji's Seed von B. J. Reinhard
In this folktale, the peasant Sanji joins many other young boys in a contest to who will be chosen to be the next king of the land. The king gives everyone a seed to grow. But, secretly, the king has boiled all the seeds in oil so they will not grow. At the end of the contest all the other boys bring beautiful plants to display, but Sangi has only a small pot of dirt where nothing grows. Thus, Sanji is chosen to be the next king because he is willing to be honest in the face of ridicule.
Young Sanji learns a valuable lesson about honesty when he cares for a special seed in an attempt to become king. Discussion starters are included.

B.J. Reinhard tells a wonderful story about honesty and perserverance in the book, Sanji's Seed. I enjoy reading the story to my little one who doesn't read on her own (even when she has me read it many times!) My elementary school age son selected the book to read to his class. He said they all really liked it and listened well (and that's a tough crowd to please). The illustrations are also beautiful. The story is timeless and the message is presented gently, so it's a fun way to learn.
