I really enjoyed this! It's on our library system's battle of the books list, so I know a lot of kids will pick this up. I will recommend to non-battle readers as well -- it has humor, authentic characters, and Slime! Respicio talks about navigating middle school, new friendships, and family expectations but these topics are lightened by the positive outlook of the main character Alex. Enjoyed learning about Filipino foods and the immigrant community where the Manalo family live.
Isabel has been raised in the Philippines, mostly by her grandparents while Mama worked as a nanny in New York City to support the family. After years apart, Isabel and Mama reunite in California where they live near relatives. Isabel misses the Philippines, her grandparents, and her best friends, but she does her best to "look for the familiar," sage advice from Lolo. Eventually Isabel finds her place in the community and her school's culinary and garden clubs, while reconnecting with Mama. Like seeds and plants, it takes time before one is ready to bloom. Isabel is thoughtful and observant; it's nice to witness her finding her voice.… (mehr)
