Über den Autor

Born into a lower middle-class Catholic family, the novelist Reymont had little formal education, but his eventful life as a theater hand and railroad worker provided him with plentiful material for his writing. Although a straightforward realist, he wrote with a lyrical perfection of style. This, mehr anzeigen combined with sharp psychological insight, placed him in the forefront of Polish fiction until his death. Reymont wrote short stories as well, but he is best known for his novels about Polish life in both rural and urban societies. His magnum opus, The Peasants (1902--09), leading to the Nobel Prize in 1924, is a broad panorama of a village caught in internal conflicts of the magnitude of those in classical Greek tragedy. It is characterized, in the words of Per Hallstrom, "by an art so grand, so sure, so powerful, that we may predict a lasting value and rank for it, not only within Polish literature but also within the whole of that branch of imaginative writing which has here been given a distinctive and monumental shape." (mehr)

At the turn of the century, Lodz, Poland was a quick-paced manufacturing center for textiles, replete with cutthroat industrialists and unsafe working conditions. Three young friends, a Pole, a Jew and a German, pool their money together to build a factory. The movie follows their ruthless pursuit of fortune. (fonte: Imdb)

This starts off REALLY STRONGLY. As I finished ch 1, I thought I'd found a new classic author and must get more of his works. That impression doesnt last.
Janina is the educated daughter of an irrascible widower. When he demands she marry (a rather engaging suitor) she refuses and leaves to become an actress.
But now it all started to become terribly dull. The ensuing chapters are largely inconsequential dialogue among the shallow and irrelevant acting folk she takes up with....the director and his faded, jealous wife...the tarts and the procuresses, the strapped for cash and the men looking for a bit of fun...
I dont often abandon a novel just 100 pages from the end...but couldnt face another word. This was a Nobel prize winning author, incidentally!

Yllättävänkin koukuttava kirja. Hetken jo pelkäsin että henkilöt kehittyisivät sellaiseen typerään sankarimuottiin, mutta onneksi loppuun asti pysyttiin maan tasalla. Aivan loistava kirja, unohdettu helmi.
