Jan Reynolds is a prizewinning photojournalist whose adventures have taken her to every livable, continent. An accomplished athlete, she is a medal-winner in World Cup biathlon and holds several high-altitude skiing and mountain climbing records. She has lectured at the National Geographic Society, mehr anzeigen IBM, the Sierra Club, and many explorers' clubs, universities, and schools throughout the world. Her work has been featured in the New York Times, National Geographic, Esquire, Vogue, People, and several ski and outdoor magazines, and she has appeared on the covers of Outside and Ultrasport. It was ok - more like a 2.5.
I could have done with less relationship angst and "blessing the food" sprinkled over the meals like salt (but only apparently when there was a man present to do it, which was annoying).

It is a special day for cousins Dawa and Olana. Dawa's father is going to find them two small horses in the family's herd. Like other young Mongolian boys, Dawa and Olana are learning to be skilled horsemen.
Living as nomads on the grassy plains, Mongolians rely on horses to support their traditional way of life. Horses help with the daily work of rounding up the goats and cows that provide meat and milk for food, as well as skins for clothing and shelter. The photographs--- of temple life, trader culture, and elaborate ceremonies--- are really the focal point of this book. They are truly stunning and give us a glimpse of a culture that is indeed vanishing. The prose is simple and explanatory, allowing young readers a chance to learn about a truly unique culture. Perhaps most interesting is the About This Book section detailing how the author came to write the book: he was sick and starving in a tent in the Himalayas during a storm when two traders unzipped it looking for shelter. It's a remarkable story about the bonds forged among strangers and the brotherhood we all share as members of the human race.… (mehr)
