Rubicons is the third book in the Freaks series by Brett Riley. While I haven't read the first two, I did enjoy this book without the added benefit of reading the others. It was an easy read. You should give this book and the series a try!

This book really wasn’t for me. I loved the diversity of the characters, but the story itself fell a little short. It was a good story idea, but it was slightly boring.

*third book of the Freaks series but can stand alone on its own
*think of St. Elmo's Fire meets Charmed - coming of age teens/adults with developing super powers
*fast-paced, easy to read
*good character development
*highly recommend

As other reviewers pointed out, Rubicons is the third installment of a - at least - tetralogy. As such, unless familiar with the earlier volumes, a reader entering this third volume is bound to lose some details about the characters and their circumstances. The novel (and its characters) knowingly walk the space of young adult literature, science-fiction, a bildungsroman + super powers mash-up. If there is an issue with the novel is that growing up and/or fighting mythical creatures with superpowers are both overly taxing enterprises. Having a bunch of teenagers willing to face both, seems at time too much of an imposition (something that - again - the characters reflect upon). Assuming a proper suspension of disbelief and obviating the oddly luxuriating descriptions of suffering (in some instances), it is an entertaining and amusing rollercoaster of a read. To see where things end up, of course, there's no alternative but waiting for the next volume.

A great twisting superhero tale. Couldn't put it down. I will definitely be reading the first two books in the series.½

Rubicons is the third in the Freaks series by Brett Riley but the first I’ve read. Although there are references to previous novels, they didn’t interfere with my enjoyment of this book and I did enjoy it quite a lot. I’m not sure what genre to put it in other than to say it’s a YA coming-of-age super hero story. Several teens face the challenges of impending adulthood and relationships while trying to keep their developing super powers hidden, fend off federal agents and fight a monster, in this case, a dragon.

The story moves at a fairly brisk pace with mostly likeable characters and deals with issues facing teens including racism and gender identity in an empathetic way. The end of the tale points to even more danger for the teens in the next book and I look forward to reading it. I listened to the audio version read by P.J. Morgan who does a marvelous job.

I received an advance audio version of this book from Netgalley and Imbrifex Audio in exchange for an honest review.½

I received and early reviewers copy of this book from Library Thing. I found the premise to be interesting as I enjoy dystopian novels. There were a lot of similar themes between this book and Handmaid's Tale as there was a religious sect in this post-now American society. I found some of the characters had to relate to, but I found them very well described. The beginning of the novel was incredibly difficult to get through. It was very rapidly paced and moved around quite a bit. You're thrown right in the middle of the story, understanding there are people at war, but not necessarily knowing why. Finding out why takes quite a bit of time, and made it difficult to relate to either side. While this novel was fast paced, it didn't keep my interest. The author wrote well and created a nice story, but it just wasn't for me.

I didn't realize that this book was the second in the series. I will have to return to fix a review after I have read the first in the series.

There are so many great things in these pages: lesser known myths, friendship, tons of adventure and tension, and even a little mystery. I wanted to love this read and have no doubt that many readers will, but while the writing was fine and characters likeable, it wasn't quite my thing.
The first pages grab right away and the pan-demigod figure (rabbit) holds tons of potential. Despite being a major part of the plot, it mostly stays in the background and watches instead of playing an active role. While I'm sure this served its purpose, it lessened the character for me.

I did enjoy the characters and found them likeable as well as relatable. Their friendship with its ups and downs was well laid. Their powers will also interesting and added grabbing twist on the usual teen drama...and it was this mix that dulled the belief end for me. They were bullied, since they didn't fit it (which is understandable), but their powers were nearing the ranks of those seen in X-Men, which made me doubt that anyone would be brave enough to mess with them...or that they would really feel threatened, since they know how to wield their powers. But again, this could just be me.

As said, it is a well-written enough but just didn't grab me the way I'd hoped, but I do believe other fans of this genre might see it differently and be drawn in. It just wasn't the book for me.

In preparation for receiving this ARC, I read the first of the series, Freaks. I found the school shooting scenarios very disturbing in the first novel, but that was not prevalent in this second one.
The young freaks are trying to stay below the feds' radar since they know that they have been bugged and are constantly followed.
Some things change when Micah's Uncle Baltar comes to stay with him, but the uncle's influence is uncertain.
The violence continues to be invasive, but there are not such disturbing deaths in this book.
Not sure that I would recommend it to young readers.

I received this as part of the LT early review program.

Thank you to the author and publisher for sending me the ARC in exchange for an honest review. Travelers is the second in the Freaks series which follows a group of teens gifted with super powers in the first book. They are learning to utilize these powers while trying to avoid a government team tasked with eliminating them if they prove a threat. Throw in a all powerful Native American god, a creepy magical old man, and a budding love interest for two of the freaks and the story really starts to run.

I found the writing solid but the pacing did drag a bit for me at times. I appreciated the representation included and the social commentary in the subtext but at times was more annoyed than anything with a few of the characters. The over use of the word ain’t also wasn’t my favorite but these were minor things. Good for fans of teen super hero tropes.½

Travelers by Brett Riley is the second in series after the first book, Freaks. And, this is the biggest problem as I did not knew this. The book was very difficult to understand if you have not read the first book. Although, the narrator was very good, but I could not understand that what was going on actually. The characters are young teenagers with good portrayal. And, I am feeling really bad for writing this as I have already read some books by the publisher which were so good.

I could only give 3 stars to the book. Thanks to Netgalley and Imbrifex Books for providing me an opportunity to read and review the book.

Thank you for allowing me to read and review this book before its published.

I didn't realize this was a sequel when I requested the book, my fault. I actually bought the first book, Freaks, after realizing my mistake, so I could get more backstory and fully understand the characters before diving into Travelers.

After reading both, I can say that you could read Travelers without fully needing to read Freaks. Brett helps with giving a little backstory and keeping you updated in the sequel. However, I felt that the first book was more intense and suspenseful than the sequel. We get a little more characters and drama in the second, but it was almost the first book with a different enemy. And the flow for both was off for me and sometimes the writing was flat and one dimensional.

I'm not sure if I'd want to continue reading this series, however I am very interested in finding out more about Micah and which way he ends up choosing.

This was a violent book full of action, deception, and survival. I truly enjoyed the lack of quotation marks but it is a style I have always enjoyed; the author did a great job with his use of this formatting type and it really added value to the story. The story was insanely action packed and fast paced from the start! A different but great read!

Very intense. What would happen if all our technology was lost at once? If it was caused by someone who wanted to go back to the proverbial simpler times? If they then set themselves up as the spiritual leader of the Crusade? Would it stay pure, keep the vision he set forth, or become corrupted? Could anything based on such loss of life lead to good? I would have rated it higher but had a problem with the writing style but it is a very strong story and I look forward to the sequel.

This review is conducted as a LibraryThing Early Reviewer.

I have been reading extensively for over 70 years and 'Lord of Order' is the first novel I have ever encountered where the author failed to identify dialogue between characters through the standard use of quotation marks.

This peculiarity was very unsettling at first, to the point that I debated not continuing to try to read further. Deciding on giving the author the benefit of the doubt I continued, but I can't say I enjoyed the experience. it was too confusing, especially initially trying to determine if the character was actually speaking to someone or was simply musing internally. The convention of dialogue being distinguished by quotation marks has worked wonderfully well since its inception. It is a mystery as to why Brett Riley decided to abandon this established practice. In any case, if he was experimenting he should be aware that the experiment failed miserably.

The story itself was interesting... up to a point. Once the battle began the storyline was an interminable description of carnage, gore, horrific and gruesome battlefield deaths. If Mr. Riley was attempting to portray that "war is Hell" he succeeded.... but then he went into overkill and the descriptions of the fighting were repetitive and uninteresting, making for a very unsatisfactory read.

I had the impression that the close was making room for a sequel. My advice is - DON'T! The second half of the book was a slog, difficult to read and tiresome to get through. I had high hopes for the Lord of Order, but they were never realized. ** stars

Brett Riley's dystopian novel Law of Order is mighty unsettling in the beginning. Not because of the subject matter, but rather because he uses no quotation marks throughout the novel. The reader who gives it a chance will find themselves adapting within pages of the start and be left with a thrilling tale of the future.

In this future, America's technology has been destroyed by a religous based organization that has taken control. Citizens are swear the fidelity to the order and live much like they did in the 18th century. Some refuse to submit and instead reside outside of the city states, doing their best to fight the guilder order. The two forces unite in New Orleans when word leaks out of a planned second purge.

In response new alliances are drawn, and questions of the past arise. Leaving moral people to question what it means to be loyal and who they swear their fidelity to.

This is an intriguing novel, populated with fascinating characters. Readers won't be disappointed.

This is a hard book to follow. Too many characters pop up here and there, can't remember who they are...good or bad. Characters were 1 dimensional and easily forgettable. Can't remember ever reading a book where I could care less about any of them. Then there is the lack of quotation marks that makes it so hard to tell if someone is talking or maybe just thinking a thought. When they do talk to each other it's like they are doing so telepathically. It just made for a frustrating read. Sorry but not my cup of tea.

I received this from LibraryThing Early Reviewers for an honest review.

A different novel, well written, a man of faith and the city he loves face a force of destruction cloaked in religious righteousness. - Interesting strong characters - has violence, scenes of torture, and a battle - story of conspiracy and rebellion.

Very intense. Scary, especially for today. Well-written, but got tedious after a while - could be because it was so intense. Didn't like the lack of quotation marks. Not sure about the ending.

I received this book through Early Reviewers. I will read pretty much anything, but I couldn’t get through this. Too many undeveloped characters, too many names to keep track. A lot of plotting and violence with no context about how the world collapsed other than a few references to Washington DC. I think the theme is how fundamentalists believe the end justifies the mean, but it gets lost with the mindless action.

I could not get past the fact that the author does not use quotation marks when the characters are speaking. It made the book hard to follow and it was too frustrating to try and finish.
