50 Women in Sport far exceeded what I was expecting. A few biographical sketches, some nice photographs, maybe a nice mix of sports and eras. Well, I got all that and more.

This offers a wonderful short history of women in sport, highlighting the pioneers that many haven't heard of as well as the more contemporary stars we have. Then we get some excellent historical photographs and the biographical sketches tell not just about the woman's life and career but places her in her historical period, obstacles that faced all athletes plus the ones only women faced.

The interviews with contemporary figures were wonderful. One major contrast with the stars of the past and our current ones is who gets to frame their stories. While this book is an excellent example of recovering the lives of the past athletes, today's athletes have more opportunity to tell their own stories, to highlight the positives and negatives of being a female athlete in this world. So the interviews were a very welcome format.

Highly recommended for anyone with an interest in women's sports, from the history to the current range of sports. This would be especially wonderful for young budding female athletes, as both empowerment and knowing the shoulders upon which they stand.

The Green Teen Cookbook
Aurora Metro Publications
978-1906582128
The Green Teen Cookbook is a guide to ethical eating written by
young people, for young people. It is the perfect antidote to our
take away crazy food habits and will help to kick the air mile
addiction. Part 1 aims to educate the apathetic youth about
seasonal eating, local produce, Fair Trade, and freeganism
amongst many topics.
The recipes themselves range from the very basic - pancakes,
pizzas, pies - to the unusual - quail, sushi - to the DIY. Never again will I buy Peanut Butter from the Supermarket Superpowers!
Each recipe has a blurb by the person who sent it in, which adds a
personal touch. We know it’s been tried and tested. However I
think the individual photos are unnecessary.
Overall the G.T.C.B has stuck a good balance between presenting
the reasons for ethical eating without being a preachy bible of eco warriorism. The flip side of this is that whilst us teens appreciate the health and environmental attributes of eating ethically, it is oh so easy just to pop down to the local Tesco’s and buy the cheapest item on offer. Though hopefully after reading the cook book you’ll think twice about doing so!
