Perhaps the most complete and informative book about Anne Frank I've read yet. The many pictures added a lot of value.

This photographic remembrance of Anne Frank appears at first like any family album. Translated from the Dutch, this photobiography, like the famous diary, captures the ordinariness of Anne and her family's life. Individual photos are mostly informal snapshots and are a bit blurry at times. But this photobiography chronicles a far-from-ordinary life, and the Association of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam sets Anne's story in a larger context, examining Hitler's rise to power, developing her family history, and the larger fate of the Jews during WWII. The establishment of the Anne Frank House in 1960 is also described.
The photographs are well captioned and the book is handsomely designed, with short essays in easily readable text. A facsimile of her last diary entry has also been included, as well as maps, interviews, chronology, and notes on different versions of her famous diary. This is a poignant, respectful tribute to Anne Frank.

The biography "Anne Frank" is about Anne Frank and her life during the Nazi invasion on Germany. It goes through her life when her and her family wore in hiding, how she felt and what are day to day life was. This book, shares real life photographs of what is was like in Germany, where she lived and her family. This will make you feel what she did back in the 1900's.
In middle school, I remember reading about Anne Frank I was really interested in World War II. Everything is so fascinated about how it was and what her life was and the struggle Anne and her family had to go through. It really opened my eyes when I got to read from Anne's perspective of how it really was with Hitler in charge and makes you feel everything she did.
This would be a good book to have students read in English, when you are learning about WWII in your history class. You could have students do a book report or journal entry describing what they would do in that situation. You could also have students write a letter either to Hitler or to Anne, telling them how you feel.

Meh. Her story has been done so many times, by so many people, from so many angles. This one doesn't really stand out or offer anything new to the narrative.

"Anne Frank Beyond The Diary"is a hard cover book written by Ruud Van Der Roll and Rian Verhoeven. The authors talk about the life of Anne Frank with her family and their life before they hid from the Nazis. In this book you can see how Anne Frank got her strong will and strong morals.Anne Frank's father was an avid photographer and took many photos of Anne Frank with her family.Vander Der Roll is a sociologist and a member of Anne Frank's House along with his colleague. He helps prepare annual Anne Frank Journal as well as students projects of The Second World War along with issues of racism and discrimination. This book has great illustrations that depict photos and the conditions Anne Frank and her family lived in while in hiding. There are pictures of her diaries and concentration camps. This book is a great way to teach children tragedies of humankind and how not to repeat those tragedies again.

My Mom had me read this book years ago, and then I pulled it off the shelf for this class. This is a story of a terrible time in our worlds history and the experience of a girl and her family. It was hard to read/look at when I was younger this book was hard to digest, when I read/looked at it a couple weeks ago it was still hard. This book was well written, it really paints a great picture. The pictures are very hard to see.

Like Inside Anne Frank's House and the Anne Frank graphic biography, this book was produced by the Anne Frank House museum in Amsterdam, the source for many of the photographs in the book, which is subtitled "A Photographic Remembrance."

This book would be an excellent companion to the reading of Anne Frank's diary by students, probably about grade 6 and up.  While it does not have as many photographs as Inside Anne Frank's House, some of the images were ones I had not seen elsewhere, and the text in this book is more readable (even though it is also translated from Dutch).

One of the most interesting images is on page 89, of a group of Frank family photo albums retrieved from the Secret Annex at the same time Anne's diary was saved.   I was pleased to see that the family had been able to bring their cherished photo albums with them into hiding, and that the albums have been preserved.  I can see hints of photos in that album that I haven't seen elsewhere. Now I need to search for a book that replicates the albums!

I would use this book as a way to introduce my class to Anne Frank, before reading The Diary of a Young Girl. Anne Frank Beyond the Diary is a quintessential collection of source material that creates the world of 1940s Europe. It has everything that one might look for when studying a subject in depth: scans from the diary, scans of Anne’s fiction writing, photographs of the secret hiding place, family photographs, Nazi documents, maps, newspaper clippings, postcards, et cetera. It moves along more or less chronologically. With asides that give the reader insights into what was happening to the society outside of the Secret Annex. It would be a great companion to the diary. Ideally if the kids are reading the diary in their Language Arts class, they could be reading Beyond the Diary in a Social Studies class.

How it broke my heart to see an image of the red-checked cover of Anne's famous diary. It's so very sad that so much ephemera survives the girl who disappeared into the maw of Hitler's war machine.

Reading Anne's diary when I was a girl left me feeling like a citizen of the world, a person with the opportunity to choose to be one of the people who were really good at heart. It felt like something that I could do for her, back when I was a romantic young teen myself. I knew that I could never be part of any religion that believed that all others can go only to hell. And I have never changed my mind about that.

The Search is a historical fiction graphic novel. This title is an introduction to the events that occurred in the Nazi Germany. A survivor of the holocaust tells of the journey that led her away from her family into many different hiding spots and finally back to her home in Amsterdam. Will she ever find her parents or any of her family from her life before the Holocaust? While this story is well written the illustrations do not seem to keep up with the story. The illustrations are Archie like with characters that seem to have the same expression throughout the story. Because of this, I found the story was for a more advanced audience then the illustrations.

Wonderful! I read this one with my ten year old. The pictures help in making Anne seem more realistic and show you her life before it was invaded by tragedy. Truly helpful to those who have read the diary but wish to know more. Recommended!

Anne Frank: Beyond the Diary, A Photographic Remembrance by Ruud van der Rol and Rian Verhoeven for the Anne Frank House. Age: teen-adult. This intriguing book of photographs and maps introduces readers to the German-Jewish girl Anne Frank and the world in which she lived prior to fleeing Nazi Germany. It discusses how German Jews were methodically stripped of their civil rights until they were virtually non-citizens. The Frank family fled to Amsterdam but the Nazis invaded the Netherlands and exterminated all the Jews they could find. All the while, Anne’s parents were collecting and moving supplies to a building behind Mr. Frank’s small factory which was to become their hiding place, the “Secret Annex” where Anne, her sister Margot, her parents and several other Jews, eight in all, hid for over 2 years before being betrayed and sent to concentration camps. Only Mr. Frank survived the war. One of his office workers, who had supplied them with food while in hiding, found Anne’s diary and other papers and gave them to Mr. Frank after the war. The diary was eventually published to great acclaim. The Secret Annex is now open as a museum so people will never forget the horror of religious persecution. The Franks and friends were in the group of the last 1000 Jews sent to concentration camps from Holland. When they were betrayed and discovered, Allied forces had already entered Belgium. They were so close to being liberated.
This book shows Frank family photos and we see Margot and Anne growing from babies to teens. No longer allowed to own cameras, some of the final photos of Mrs. Frank and the girls were taken in photo booths like those found in train stations or shopping areas. There are several photos of Mr. Frank’s office workers, some of which helped the hidden. Other office workers were not to be trusted and so knew nothing. Helping Jews in hiding was very dangerous, for the helpers could also have been arrested and shot, or sent to labor or extermination camps. Nevertheless, there were heroic people who recognized the injustice and horror of the Nazi system and helped those being persecuted. I wonder how many of us would have been so brave.
The last chapter of this book discusses the liberation of the camps, and how Anne’s diary was found and published. The camp photos show living prisoners, not the piles of emaciated corpses stacked like cord wood. It is therefore very appropriate for middle and high school children.
This book brings Anne and her pre-war German society to life once again. It is a book every youth and adult needs to read. Only when we recognize evil from the past can we learn to recognize it today. Only by reading how people were systematically stripped of their civil rights can we recognize and fight it when it happens now. Only by reading how courageous people helped those in need can we and our children learn the meaning of heroism in helping those who must remain silent for their own protection. And finally, only by seeing the pain of religious persecution can we become more compassionate and loving human beings of all God’s children no matter their belief or unbelief. A lovely remembrance of Anne and a culture that is but a memory. There is a book on the same topic in our library’s Youth section, 10 C, by Miep Gies, the woman who worked in Mr. Frank’s office and supplied those in hiding with food and clothing, and who found and saved Anne’s diary and other papers. It is an important and lovely remembrance of Anne.

My Response - This story would work as background reading in the middle grades as well as information reading for children. The pictures really add to the compelling story and keep the reader interested in solving the mystery.

Curriculum - As above, use for background reading or introduction to a history unit. Students will find a lot of facts included in the story of Grandma Esther. There is a factual portrait of life at Camp Westerbork and in Auschwitz. Great for students who need a high-interest presentation.

Speaking as someone who has yet to read the diary (I will, I will!) this was still a great overview of what became the phenomenon that is Anne Frank. It adequately personalizes her story and places her as one among many victims and diarists of German atrocities during WWII. Of course hers is the one that became most famous, and only a reading of the diary itself will demonstrate why. This book, meanwhile, also offers a good overview of general events of the time, while providing the Anne Frank timeline and wonderful supplemental photographs.

I loved reading the Diary of Anne Frank in elementary school. When I read this book I thought it brought her story to life. The photos and documents really put into perspective how she lived not just her emotions of the war. In this book you can see more pictures and have a visual of her story. I would use this in a classroom along with the Diary of Anne Frank when teaching the Holocaust. Also you can look at this book when doing an art project with students on how pictures alone can tell such a wonderful story with no words. I would recommend reading this and using it in a classroom.

Anne Frank-Beyond the Diary is a photographic journal that shows many photos and documents that give us extra insight to Anne Frank’s life.

This book is very informative in that it shows many photos and gives us details of Anne’s life that we didn’t know from reading her diary.

This would be a good supplemental book to the Diary of Anne Frank when you are reading these in class. This of course would be an excellent resource when talking about the Holocaust with children.
