It captures the restlessness of the travelers’ spirit, wherein our youthful Lucius struggles to immerse himself in all foreign cultures and experiences. More than that, he engages in philosophical wanderings that leads him to challenge his understanding of the world around him. It is within these shifting boundaries that Lucius falls in with an eccentric religious sect, much to the concern of his conventional parents. This book is at turns satirical and tender to the flailing human condition. The writing is smart and lively, providing engaging dialog and quirky personalities. The author handles existential quandaries with a playful wit and charming lightness. It breathes new life into a historical era in which we tend to accept cookie-cutter preconceptions. Breaking the accepted lore, the work restores a human element to early church struggles. All this, and still it is a funny, fast-paced read.
