Fascinating and fairly thorough history of the struggle between human beings and malaria over millennia. The author uses the fight against malaria as a sort of microcosm to demonstrate the workings of racism, colonialism and imperialism. Some of the things she warned about near the end of the book, over a decade ago are coming to fruition now. Well worth a read if you are interested in public health, disease or ecology

The only real criticism I have of this book is the author's claim of "we're all migrants". This erases the reality that in some places, a lot of people were brought against their will during times of slavery; and that a lot of people are colonizers and not migrants.
Otherwise, this is an excellent and highly informative read! I definitely learned a lot of very interesting things while reading.

Finally finished! I didn't get into this book quite as much as I did the other book I've read by this author. I also hit a bit of a slump while reading this one (not the fault of the book). However, I still found this quite engaging and informative, especially as I've not really read about malaria before.

I would like to describe this book as not being alarmist. But, honestly, it is rather alarming when the author puts into context just how many potential, havoc wreaking superbugs are out there just waiting for the right combination of factors to initiate a society-collapsing pandemic. Other than that, and the overwhelming feeling of needing to wash my hands, thumbs up, great stuff!
