Nice little SF tale with. Good guys and space ships and bad guys and aliens. Even an assassin and some pirates. A decent plot and some interesting, if quirky, characters. Then...it all started going to shit.
First, add to the plot a shape changing alien creature - okay. A bit weird, but as a plot device it could work.
Next, have a character use astral projection to ‘read’ the past - because cameras aren’t a thing in the far future, I guess.
Now, add a secret super ninja killer - ...and I’m done.
I’m not even halfway through the book yet, and there are so many extra plot devices it’s getting clanky. The characters are still largely superficial stereotypes, but instead of developing them further...here’s another odd thing/alien/power to further complicate things.
