½There are very few biographies or histories of Heliogabalus, and very little of this sparse documentation is what a modern reader would consider to be "truth." The author tries his best to turn these deficiencies into a strength by examining the changing field of history from Roman times to the modern day. He also pads the book with general observations about emperors in ancient Rome, all riddled with British humor that does not quite map elegantly onto a scholarly work. Not recommended, except for readers who really [heart] the Roman Empire.… (mehr)
This book had the capability to be really interesting given the authority of the author in relation to the subject matter. However…it really just turned out to be a showcase of knowledge rather than an engaging story. The fact that the appendix of characters and latin terms is 37 pages long gives you a clue about how much time you will spend flicking to the back of the book to see who this new person that turned up in the narrative is.
Fróðleg umfjöllun um hernað í Evrópu á tímum Grikkja og Rómverja. Höfundur gefur ekki aðeins greinargott yfirlit yfir hvað vitað er um hernaðartækni heldur lýsir hann líklegri upplifun einstaklingsins. Hvernig samtímamenn sáu fyrir sér hernað og andstæðinga og hvernig hernaður mótaði samfélögin.
