A Round of Stories by the Christmas Fire (Hesperus… von Charles Dickens

I read these over the last couple weeks and wasn't super impressed with most of them. I think I could have liked the Gaskell one but kept falling asleep due to sheer exhaustion of the holidays. Perhaps that would have been the case with the others, too, had I tried a little harder to stay awake! Most of these are not centered around Christmas so can actually be enjoyed any time of year without needed to be in the "Christmas spirit". I'll give it another go in later years, I'm sure.

Another Round of Stories by the Christmas Fire von Charles Dickens

The stories in this book were originally published in 1853 as a special Christmas edition of Dickens's magazine, Household Words, the second such.

Dickens again asked his contributors to provide him with stories that exemplified the spirit of Christmas, rather than being specifically set at Chritmastime. So, the stories and poems are about family ties, affection, overcoming adversity, and murder and ghosts!

There are some good tales here, notably The Old Lady's Story by Eliza Lynn Linton and The Squire's Story by Elizabeth Gaskell, but overall this collection is not quite as strong as the first volume, A Round of Stories by the Christmas Fire. Nonetheless, a nice Yuletide read.… (mehr)
