This book picks up right where Air left off. A stupidly impulsive attack on Ruthen leaves Nathan critically injured and Tom totally demoralized. Tom steals a boat and takes Nathan in search of help. The two men wind up on a small, strange island far to the north where Tom begins to feel a pull on his powers and begins to learn more about magery.
I enjoyed this book much more than Air in that it's Tom's story of growing and interacting with the fire mage. The life on the island gives Tom a chance to live in a society. Nathan's ego is bruised once he recovers because he's just another guy and not the powerful mage he was on the ship. The story could have used a little more intensity but was still a good story.… (mehr)

Nathan is an air mage; he has the power to control air and wind. And his skills get put to use navigating ships around the ocean. It seems like a tedious task, and in some ways it is. Add to it that he's working for Ruthen, a ruthless fire mage, who looks down on anyone he considers to be of lesser ability. And it was Ruthen who killed Nathan's childhood friend, Tom, many years before.

When a mysterious mage who appears to have power over water shows up on the ship, Nathan learns the story he heard might not be true. First, water mages don't exist. Second, Tom is alive. And his power over water is exactly what a fire mage like Ruthen would fear. As the two get a chance to reconnect, both of them are hesitant. After all, Tom has plans that might be a problem for Nathan. And Nathan's not sure if he can allow himself to fall for Tom if he's just going to leave.

This was like a nice episode of a longer story. It set up the background and conflict for this trilogy nicely. There's certainly not a lot of heat or steam here, but that's not really what I felt this first installment was intended to convey. I definitely enjoyed reading it and I look forward to picking up the next book.

I really couldn't get into this story. I found the idea of the story interesting and the struggle with being a night and going against the code of the king but the characters ended up annoying me. As the story finally progressed and Seth and Kent ended up getting together, Seth is completely surprised that Kent has been interested in him. Seth hasn't shown any interested previously but then all of a sudden drops the L word. Seemed like it didn't fit to me. I wanted to like it but just couldn't.

As one of the group who worked on editing and proofing these stories and helped put the anthologies together I might be considered biased, but these anthologies are definitely worthy of the 5 star rating.
