Very basic summary of some witchy ways told in a humorous manner but with too much plugging of the shop she works at.

Love the cover. Love the tidbits. Would have liked a little more in-depth info, but I say that about everything. It was nice to read something so down-to-earth in a field that tends to be super woo-woo and ~enlightened~ in its language.

Belief, respect, and righteous ridicule

I asked for this book because it sounded like a hoot to read and wow it certainly is. Mya Spalter's combination of belief, respect, and ridicule makes for a book that is instructive (if you want to be instructed) while also providing an enjoyable read for those who have no truck with this nonsense but who are curious anyway. Novelists might find it useful for suggesting some details to weave into their stories.

Sections on color magic, stones, herbs, oils, tarot, and other accoutrements of the modern witch are interspersed with asides on why this stuff, while being fun and helpful for maintaining focus, isn't actually needed. Intention and focus are what matters. There are funny stories, too, and asides about some of the nutters who wander into Enchantments, the magic shop where Ms Spalter works. (They don't sell swords any more after being robbed at swordpoint.)

So who will enjoy this book? Novelists, as mentioned above, and readers who have a general interest in witchcraft and like humor. It is a useful introduction to modern witchcraft that pays particular attention to artifacts of practice.

I received a review copy of "Enchantments: A Modern Witch's Guide to Self-Possession" by Mya Spalter (Random House) through NetGalley.com.

I'm not wiccan or currently practicing witchcraft, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the hell out of this book! The author is irreverent, funny, blunt, and honest - in short, everything I love in a non-fiction author. Divided into two sections, Enchantments covers witchy implements (alters, herbs, colors, stars, calendars, etc) and magical intentions (astrology, money drawing, attraction, etc.). Threaded in amongst all this fun knowledge are wonderful drawings and keen insight on modern witchcraft and whimsy. Even if that's not your bag, there's a lot of fun stuff about astrology, herbs, and cleaning that can be implemented in your life; this guide is as useful as you want it to be. A fun read that will reach a wide audience.… (mehr)
