I really liked these stories. I've seen most of the movies made from them, and as is usually the case, the stories are better than the movies. Since they were written mid-twentieth century, of course you have the annoying curse of the authors calling women "girls." And women are of course mostly window-dressing. Here's an especially sickening scene in "Damnation Alley" by Roger Zelazny, the only movie preferred to its story:

"He bent toward her, and she began to rub his shoulders. Her hands were quick and strong. "You do that good, girl." "Thanks." He straightened up, leaned back. Then he reached out, took the flask and had another drink. She took a small sip when he passed it to her. The furies rode about them, but the bridge above stood The siege. Tanner turned off the lights. "Let's make it," he said, and he seized her and Drew her to him. She did not resist him, and he found her belt buckle and unfastened it. Then he started on the buttons. After a while, he reclined her seat. "Will you keep me?" She asked him. "Sure." "I'll help you. I'll do anything you say to get you through." "Great." "After all, if Boston goes, then we go, too." "You bet." Then they didn't say much more.

Well-written, even if a little heavy on unattributed dialogue. Succeeded in making me very uncomfortable, thinking about what it would be like to be in his shoes, not every knowing whether he could trust what he thought was reality. Made me think of "The Matrix," as well, because of this problem in distinguishing reality from everything else.

THE LEGENDARY WOMEN DETECTIVES 6 NOVELETS BY JEAN MARIE STINE focuses on WOMEN detectives. These fictional detectives rivaled both Holmes and Wimsey in their powers of detection. Each short novel hilights the talents. At the beginning of the novel, the reader gets a bit of an inside look at the author(s) of these very talented fictional women.

I loved this! Until I read THE LEGENDARY WOMEN DETECTIVES, I had no idea these characters existed,now I do! I just wish the stories were a bit longer and more ladies talents were brought to light!

Also, a round of applause goes out to ADDISON BARNES for the great narration!

This is an Audio book that re-introduces 6 stories or novelettes that were nominated for retro HUGO or NEBULA awards. All are from the early 1940s and some age better then others. I enjoyed them all.

Rog Phillips: "Rat in the Skull". Good story

H. L. Gold: “Inside Man”. This one didn't age well. It's OK

Leigh Brackett: “The Stellar Legion” Early Brackett. Her later works are amazing.

Cordwainer Smith‘s “Scanners Live in Vain” - One of his better odd stories.

Evelyn Martin: "Reluctant Eve" - Not my favorite

Don Wilcox's “The Voyage That Lasted 600 Years” - I Liked this one a lot.

Perhaps I am easily pleased, but I rather enjoyed this. The Prisoner is made a prisoner even within the confined circumstances of The Village; he flirts with Number 7, plays chess with the Admiral, assassinates a few people in London and life goes back to normal. The level of mind-bending is about average for one of the TV episodes. I would find it difficult to describe anything that actually happened in the story, but I enjoyed reading it.½

A mixed bag of course, but definitely worth reading. Even my very manly husband liked many of these stories.

Fantastic anthology! I used a couple stories for high school speech competition. The book is a well rounded compilation of stories that demonstrate a wide variety of ways in which to look at the mythology of the vampire.

I read this for a class in college on Gender and enjoyed it immensely. The editors did a fine job of picking excellent, intriguing stories from across the decades. I highly recommend to any gender student who wants to study women in science fiction or women in literature. I also recommend for any one who enjoys a good anthology of science fiction stories!
