Rainbow Joe and Me is such a good book! It gives readers a new perspective of how to mix colors! Joe is blind and Eloise is an artist. Everyday Eloise tells Joe about her paintings and he tells her how he sees colors. In the end, Joe shows Eloise how he see colors by playing the saxophone. She sees the rainbow notes and is amazed with how Joe is able to feel colors .

This book reminds me of Duke Ellington and His Orchestra because of the different colors of the musical notes. To me it's just proof that music is not seen but felt and whether we are blind or deaf or hearing or seeing...music is a universal language.… (mehr)

Eloise, is an artist who loves to paint. She mixes her colors together to paint vibrant pictures of fish and monkeys. Her neighbor is Rainbow Joe, and although he is blind he tells Eloise he loves colors also. Eloise, doesn't understand how Rainbow Joe sees colors, but he does described them beautifully. Even Eloise's mom is confused on Joe's appreciation for colors. One day after church Joe shoes Eloise how he mixes colors. He plays beautiful Jazz music on the saxophone the notes blend together like colors on a canvas. My son really liked this book, he also enjoyed the use of vibrant colors in the pictures. This book did spark a few questions as to what is blind? Why is Rainbow Joe wearing glasses?… (mehr)

Eloise is a young girl who loves to paint. She tells Rainbow Joe about all of the beautiful paintings she creates by mixing colors to make new ones. Rainbow Joe is blind but insists that he can mix colors, too. Eloise and her mother do not understand this since he is blind and cannot see the colors. Rainbow Joe tries to explain to Eloise that he is going to show her one day how he does mix colors. That day finally comes and Rainbow Joe takes out a saxophone. He starts playing amazing sounds and right then, Eloise gets it. She is able to feel the fierce, strong red notes and the deep blue notes. She feels all of the colors that he is mixing together to create this work of art that is equally as beautiful as the ones she creates. I think this book did a good job of representing one aspect of a person who is blind through the viewpoint of a young girl. I would have liked to see something more develop out of the story after Eloise and her mother begin to understand Rainbow Joe. But this book could be a good introduction for younger students to begin to think about people with disabilities.… (mehr)
