Lucy Tempest

This book was interesting. I don't regret reading it but neither do I think I will read it again.
The writing of this book was good. It was never choppy. It was a little overly poetic at times for me, but I think most would really like it.
It was interesting to see how Dietrich's actions were explained as the story went on. It was obvious that he did everything that he did do out of wanting to protect the people he was around.
One thing I wish I knew was more of Ava's plans for the throne. She does not seem to have any motivation for wanting it other than keeping it out of her sister's grasp.

I enjoyed the concept and twist of this retelling of Aladdin, in many ways, it was enjoyable (but yes, predictable like others have said) and I will continue to read the rest of the series.

However, too many misplaced modern-day references just put it off balance, made it almost cheesy (and clearly this wasn't meant to be a comedy). First of all, a train? In assumedly ancient times? A train (and I don't think it was a wagon train...). References to being bullied in school (not that there wouldn't have been some type of schooling, but the way the book has it, you'd think "mean girls in a high school setting"). Other slang and lingo you wouldn't have thought to be around a millennium or two ago.

I get it, it's "fantasy, it's a YA book, you gotta connect to the youth," but c'mon you can do better than that. There's no establishment that this was in some way supposed to be Aladdin meets Once Upon a Time or what is that Disney XD show? I guess I'm just weirdly nitpicky about things like that.… (mehr)

Lucy Tempest does an excellent job of updating the classic Aladdin Folklore for modern day. This book would be a good resource to utilize for a group of students who are looking to do comparative analysis of various old and new structured tales. The characters are classic, yet unique.
