Über den Autor

Ang Tharkay was also one of the very few Sherpas from those early days to tell his own story-the story of a young man from a poor village who, like many of his compatriots, repeatedly risked his life for a few rupees and the chance of more work next year. Ang Tharkay, however, stood out, quickly mehr anzeigen earning the trust and respect of the "sahibs" with whom he climbed. When the French team wanted a Sherpa to organize their Annapurna expedition, they sought him out. Never before published in English, Sherpa is Tharkay's memoir-a curious blend of innocence and insight, of adventure and hardship, offering a priceless glimpse into the lives of the local guides and porters upon whom depended all mountaineering successes in that era. With few exceptions, their personal stories have been unknown to Western readers, until now. Born in 1908, Aug Tharkay was one of the leading Sherpas during the exploration period of the Himalaya. After many years as a sirdar on European expeditions, he opened his own guiding service in 1954 taking trekkers up Kangchenjunga, although he also continued to work for some high-level mountaineering expeditions. He died in 1981 in Kathmandu. weniger anzeigen
