In his book with the subtitling “A theology of Intolerant Love”, K. Erik Thoennes an Assistant Professor of Biblical and Systematic Theology at Talbot School of Theology, Biola University covers the central role that divine jealousy plays in the activities of God in the historical scheme of the Bible. Yet this attribute of God is ignored teaching in the church today. Here though this book he fills a huge void in regards to the jealously of God. We see how it is important to understand how the word “jealous” is used. Its use in Exodus 20:5 to describe God is different from how it is used to describe the sin of jealousy (Galatians 5:20). The church desires leaders who are dynamic, educated, and entertaining, but it is highly unlikely you will ever see ‘jealous’ as one of the desired qualities of leaders within the church. However, jealousy is one of the primary attributes of the great leaders in the Bible.

This is sin in Paul in the writings II Corinthians 11:2 “For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin.” As human jealousy is seldom send as becoming of a follower of Christ since it tends only to be understood as a negative emotion. However, the Bible tells us that God is a jealous God, and Erik Thoennes offers us unique insights into Godly Jealousy as taught in Scipture, and also looks closely at biblical leaders who displayed Godly human jealousy. Thoennes masterfully draws ethical and theological implications from godly jealousy for the 21st Century. This book is a must read for anyone who is concerned with character development and who seeks to know the attributes of God for teaching in the church today.
