This book of suggested country road getaways with the author’s sketches was produced nearly 35 years ago, so its relevance today is chiefly to suggest possible destinations and simply as an art book. I’ve been on some of these back roads and I have to admit I did want to jump into the car a couple of times and just drive. I want to follow some of Thollander’s routes, but I will check to see other references to make sure the attractions mentioned are still there, and that they haven’t put a superhighway through the route.½

An older yet wonderful book about exploring California by car. Interesting illustrations and personal narrative by the author. A great book to plan a brief escape.
